Wife's computer destroyed by MBR-eating malware that shut down the machine within 15sec. of trying to run WinXP repair. But the conversion didn't go so well.

Need to recover files.

So since Telewest/NTL/Virgin are dropping Sky One from their service, seems like I'm likely to have to download all the stuff that I was watching on that channel. Which means I might as well ditch the entire cable TV service really given that I've already seen all the shows they have on constant repeat everywhere else.

Might well just build myself a MythTV box I should think, with a couple of freeview DTV cards and a nice fat bittorrent connection. Finally merge my computer and telly like I've been meaning to for ages.

Ubuntu is pretty nifty. See inside for some random comments on linux finally being for the desktop. I will certainly annoy and/or infuriate at least one person with this entry.

Linux

It would be an understatement to say that I was surprised when my girlfriend informed me that she's a hermaphrodite. Twice we had sex in the three years we've been together. Neither time was I able to see much since she preferred absolute darkness. I do recall however an act that may be peculiar. As I had seen in myriad pornographic films, it was the man who should guide his own magic wand into the warm, damp hat to reveal the white rabbit. Yet both times she had brushed my hand aside taking responsibility for the package. Was I escorted past security, I've been asking myself.

So, my tech support issue has been solved. It only took 8 days in the end. (Eight days would be bad if I was a paying customer, but for free service I think it's acceptable.)

Plus:

  • Putting academic life back on track
  • French classes
  • MFC (non-)news
  • less /proc/kcore
  • Teh WIPOpolltamus

A recent slashdot story makes it sound like Dell is really sympathetic to the linux community. In truth, they're either lying, or they don't understand a single fucking thing about what we need.
