The book barely makes sense, the movie makes none. I still like it a lot. I was reminded of this the other day. Story by Raymond Chandler, movie adaptation done in part by William Faulkner. I think it's the mostly poorly plotted film on common lists of top 100 films. It's well-written enough that you sort of think you know what's going on and don't quite notice how confusing it is - it's like mazes in dreams in Inception. The plot doesn't really matter.
