So I had the catalytic converter stolen out of my Prius last week. I had been thinking, "You know, I should get one of those protector things for it..." but I guess they beat me to it.

Also: we're getting the band back together at CHIHUSIMEET II? This summer???

When I last lived in Chicago, we had CHIHUSIMEET as I was just about to leave (cf: https://www.hulver.com/scoop/story/2012/7/3/202333/3300 among others). Now that I'm back in Chicago, we can do this again! Low key, hang out, play some board games, grill some stuff. I'm targeting August 26th, but we're still taking suggestions for dates. I'm willing to host but other locals can also volunteer. I just want to hang with some people this summer!

I also want to float the idea of ChiHuSiStock for next summer. If not HERE, I'm up for the idea of some HuSiStock somewhere else? The city is nice but it also has drawbacks, after all.

I've also been thinking about doing some open house style party for my birthday (early September) this year.  Obviously anybody reading this is welcome to pop by for it if you reach out. Once I figure out what I'm doing.

Job is okay -- I just got pulled into a new group, the VP I'm under just expanded his scope and he's making a small team to do all sorts of stuff and I was hand-picked for it as the ML guy. And AI, but I really don't know deep learning and especially not the LLM/GPT type stuff, but I've been working on catching up on that and getting ahead of it basically since the start of the year. So this seems good for me? As long as I can deliver...

We're getting an e-scooter thing for those times we're traveling a little bit but want to avoid driving or the bus. This happens fairly often! A lot of 0.5-2 mile trips.

I caught a cold (verified to not be COVID), first time in years. Really annoying to coincide with a time that I don't have a car on hand. Tried a free trial of one of those premium grocery service things that will do delivery for you. It's pretty okay, free delivery, lots of coupons on top, I'm halfway considering keeping it after the trial runs out since the $100/yr fee would pay for itself over the year even though I do tip generously. The store is only half a mile away though.

< Well. That just happened. | Greetings >

I worry about that by ucblockhead (2.00 / 0) #1 Sat Jul 22, 2023 at 10:55:59 AM EST
We've got a Prius sitting in front of our house that almost never gets driven.   It's my son's, in theory, but he's never here.   We don't want to sell it before he graduates as he may need it then.

they have protector things... by gzt (2.00 / 0) #2 Sat Jul 22, 2023 at 11:07:29 AM EST
...that at least make it inconvenient enough that it serves as some level of deterrent. they want in and out in less than 2 minutes, having to spend 5-10 is perhaps a risk they don't want to take especially if there's another prius just down the road.

The DC area's theft ring comes from Baltimore because why wouldn't it!

I've been here for 9 years?  and I guess either no one does that here or if they do the Jeep Patriot is hard to get to?  I dunno.

they're particularly interested in the prius by gzt (2.00 / 0) #4 Sat Jul 22, 2023 at 01:21:04 PM EST
And some other hybrids, but the Prius is particularly valuable for a few reasons. Jeep Patriot is probably not high on the list.

yeah by dev trash (2.00 / 0) #5 Sat Jul 22, 2023 at 10:35:17 PM EST
but it does sit pretty high and in theory is easy to get the cat out.

yeah i mean, like this: by gzt (2.00 / 0) #6 Mon Jul 24, 2023 at 02:57:36 PM EST
the part is $2k new for a Prius, $200 on a Jeep. The one for the Prius needs a lot more precious metals. I don't know if it's worth the effort for the salvage price from the Jeep.

The one for the Prius needs a lot more precious metals.

That kind of says bad things about the quality of the Prius' engine if it's not completely burning the fuel...

not necessarily. Early priuses were famous for outputing cleaner air in LA (and worse areas) than they sucked in. Also they may be trying to run lean for better mileage than a Jeep, and that requires more and different catalysts.

And then there's always the "Toyota tax". Parts aren't needed often, so when you need them they are several times more expensive. Learned that on my dad's old Toyota. The alternator died, and replacing it cost at least 4 times what my Chevy would cost. Somebody else had a Volvo in service, and that would have been 4 times more than the Toyota.

But if they are preferentially stolen (indicating more platinum), then it probably means their engines aren't burning enough gas.

Lean Burn by ambrosen (4.00 / 1) #10 Sun Jul 30, 2023 at 02:21:57 PM EST
It's burning more nitrogen, which needs reducing as NOx gases are powerful air pollutants and greenhouse gases. That plus less unburnt fuel means it needs to work hard to keep up to operating temperature.

doesn't that mean different catalysts? Or do they just ship the whole thing in and let the real recyclers split out the separate metals and melt them down individually? I'd think they'd be happier with a hunk of nothing but platinum.

Wumpus

Remembers something about a passing mention in chemistry class that the "gunk at the bottom" of some metal reduction (aluminum production?) was more than enough to pay for the process. Perhaps I'm underestimating what recyclers will do to get at valuable materials.

I mentioned this on the elephant site, but I'm interested in Chicago husi meet and can help with some of the logistics
