Plus, another new job, Covid strikes, legalization follies and less.

Poll: What will be the next USian catastrophe?

The youngest is now 21, we opened presents on her birthday, then dropped her off for a dinner meetup with her friends. She got home well after midnight.

Her first purchase was some Mike's hard lemonade, black cherry flavor. I can't complain too much since I just bought a 15 pack of fruit wheat ale.

Mrs. Ha is slowly getting a job as a hospital patient transporter, at perhaps Rochester's largest employer. It's the age of Covid, it's a large bureaucracy, there are lots of forms to fill out and send back. So far it's all on track, she had a physical and drug test scheduled for today. We're not sure how physical it will be, as she also has to transport specimens.

I hope it all goes well, as we really need a bit of a second income. The application process has been stressful, since so much of it is done by email, and all that Mrs. Ha learned about email and attachments when she was going to school has been forgotten. There have been a lot of calls during my work day.

Covid struck my family, my mom got it a few days ago, and now my dad has it. So far I think I've avoided it. I've been having terrible allergies this year, enough for me to worry, but every test I've taken has been negative.

The family Fourth party and pre-birthday celebration at my parents was thus canceled. They suggested we come over and hang out in the pool and blow stuff up, but it wouldn't have been the same. We stayed home and I even got a few turns of Gettysburg '88 in.

Last year New York legalized the possession and consumption of marijuana, in small amounts. Governor Cuomo was trying to save his job and maybe distract his critics.

Laws about growing at home, selling and buying have been put off until 2023. These things take time.

A grey market has arisen. For some shops, you buy a sticker for $40, and are gifted an eighth of weed. For others, buying a tee shirt once is enough. This is all anecdotal, of course.

Then there's the rez. There's one about forty minutes away, a few hundred acres near Basom where the Tonawanda can live in peace. The last time I went onto a rez was during the college tours of 2018 for cheap gas, this was the one south of Buffalo. Things are different today, there were about 20 places selling pot, ranging from a trailer to a regular store.

Needless to say, hypothetical trips to western Massachusetts to buy weed have become very hypothetical.

The GOP takes control of both House and Senate in the fall followed by Trump winning reelection in 2024.

Something big has to change if Dems aren't going to lose the House.

Senate is currently a tossup by most analyses but Dems effectively need a super-majority to end the filibuster. Right now only Manchin and Sinema are on record against it but there's reason to think that a number of "moderate" senators are hiding behind Manchin and Sinema.

To get things done, the Dems need a solid majority well past 50/50. So even if they hang on to the Senate, they're likely to lose the House and the makeup of the Senate will favor the GOP.

I'm hoping by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #10 Wed Jul 13, 2022 at 09:24:07 AM EST
the Roe vs Wade backlash, Russian sanctions, January 6th and Biden removing 10k of student loans is enough to make it competitive.

I was optimistic about that for a while by lm (2.00 / 0) #11 Wed Jul 13, 2022 at 09:53:29 AM EST
And it may very well help the Senate stay blue. Whether or not it allows the Senate to go blue enough to end the filibuster is a different question.

And the House seems to be a different story all together. Democrats have to make gains in districts that lean very Republican to keep their majority.

I don't like to be a Negative Nancy here but I'm growing more pessimistic by the day. Moving to Costa Rica is looking better and better.

Isn't it expected though? by xth again (2.00 / 0) #12 Wed Jul 13, 2022 at 04:06:33 PM EST
Not an expert on US politics, but this Guardian article makes that point that
> every time there is a change of party in the White House, the new incumbent party loses seats in the House of Representatives during the subsequent midterm elections

Sure, it's expected by lm (2.00 / 0) #13 Thu Jul 14, 2022 at 11:51:42 AM EST
But not for the blunt historical reasons The Guardian suggests. That this happened every time since FDR doesn't really tell us anything about what's going to happen this fall.

Like their analysis of the VA gubernatorial race, it's shallow. The outcome wasn't a big surprise but not because of history.

In VA the Dems had a weak and unexciting candidate who made a number of unforced errors and a charismatic GOP candidate that not only whooped up the base but was able to capitalize on the unforced errors of the Democratic candidate with a message that resounded with white suburban voters.

And even then it was a close race with less than a 2% difference between the candidates.

History isn't destiny. The high likelihood of the House flipping to Republican come November comes more because of the particular candidates that are running in particular districts than anything else. And part of that comes from a built in institutional advantage that Republicans have given the natural gerrymandering of the states combined with artificial gerrymandering done by one party control of state legislators.

While there are fair odds that the GOP will take the Senate it's highly improbable they'll get enough seats to remove an impeached Biden official from office.

Laws about growing at home, selling and buying hav by dev trash (2.00 / 0) #15 Thu Jul 14, 2022 at 08:50:16 PM EST
Virginia passed laws making it legal but deferred on the whole selling it thing, thinking they'd still be in control after elections.  And surprise they weren't.  So now you can be gifted weed but can not sell or buy it, and in fact some of the decriminalization was rolled back.  Odds are it'll never be legal to sell or buy.
