Print Story Happy to see this place is still around!

I was just about to type a post on Mastodon listing "websites I miss", and good ol' K5 was on the list. One thing led to another and that reminded me of Husi. What a surprise that it's still around, _and_ that I was able to guess my old username and password!

I used to hang out in K5 from about 2002 to 2005, so I remember fondly its better days. Back in 2003, while still in college, I announced my first major Linux project via a K5 post that was then Slashdotted — what a feeling!

I used to post and comment every now and then but I wasn't a major user of the site. I did recognize the names of the regulars so I had what today one would call a parasocial relationship with that community, I guess: I did not hang out on IRC or whatever, and it always felt that a bunch of people there knew each other closely and I felt sort of like an outsider, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

I do remember the fallout of K5 being taken over by trolls, and the exodus to here, which cemented in my mind that there was a tightly-knit subcommunity of nice people within K5. I did open an account here and was active for a bit, but Husi always felt more focused on diaries and keeping that tight subcommunity (which I didn't feel like part of) together rather than being "another K5 like the one before the trolls", which is what I wanted at the time, I guess. So I eventually drifted away from both Husi and K5.

Fast forward, what, 15 years? and the site is still online, people are still posting diaries, and it looks pretty much the same! And oh boy, those formatting toolbars in this textbox truly cemented the feeling of time travel! Those are... WinWord 6.0 icons!? (Perhaps Word 95, with the IE4-ish hyperlink icon, I don't think that was around in Word 6)

Anyway, just wanted to say hello, and share the bit of joy I got from seeing this site is still around. I clicked through a few pages of diaries to see if I recognized any of the names of the old-time regulars, but apart from hulver none really rang a bell.

In the past 15 years, I've done a lot more software (htop, LuaRocks, Teal), played music, got myself a PhD, went through relationships and breakups, and lived in 3 different Brazilian states. How are you all doing, Husi-ites? Anyone from the early '00s still around?

Ah, important PS — I was scrolling through the copy of my K5 post I linked above, and found a comment I totally forgot about: someone warning others that my account (LodeRunner) wasn't the same as that of another K5 regular (Lode Runner, with a space). I registered my account without knowing about the other's existence (LodeRunner was my username on Slashdot and other places back then), so if you do remember that other person, that's not me. I don't think he ever logged into Husi though.

Kind of nice to be keeping in touch with people I’ve known online for a quarter century or so.

... about a new and exciting website. That's how I ended up on k5. The trolls taking over and attacking me personally when my dad died in 2003 was the end of that relationship.

I remember your handle for k5. I'm happy to see you pop back up here.

Since my k5 days, I've been widowed, my kids went from middle/high school to college and beyond. My youngest is now working on her PhD is physical chemistry with a focus on quantum computing. My oldest is now editing several academic journals for a liver disease association. I find myself in the first healthy romantic relationship of my life.

Though I've remained adjacentally social throughout, it is remarkable what an subcommunity of thoughtful people can be. Glad to see we're still here.
