Had to create a new account as I don't remember what the old ones were. Also, where is the Hole again? or do I need to earn experience / karma / nft to see it. The button says "new hole entry" but then it won't let me. Oh HuSi.

Oh I forgot to write the actual post by xth again (2.00 / 0) #1 Tue Feb 15, 2022 at 05:36:28 PM EST
On a bit of an old-skool trip as I fancied a bit of a gentler, less culture-war social media experience and interacting with those who remember what a cgi-bin is.
Went to post on MeFi, lasted less than a day as I seem to have annoyed a couple of grannies from the Midwest, as well as the mod. Oh well.
Joined dailygammon, good for a game and a bit of a chat with some ancient hippies.

I remember the old HuSi. I deleted all my post with G+ was a thing and inexplicably everyone here joined, thus revealing their real life identities. I was worried how all the crap I wrote here would look like to my new employer. G+. Who's laughing now, eh, Google. Actually they are. Worked for a startup who made restaurant reservations online. Their main discovery tool was Google Maps. You literally pay Google to sell you users. And Google are willing to oblige. They sell some to you, some to your competitors. Nurture a healthy market place. Meanwhile they look at how well your business does, what works and what doesn't. Then they copy it and launch a rival driven by ML. They learn from your mistakes and do it 10 times better. But it doesn't matter - the business was just a tax scam by a Japanese investment fund. Who's laughing now, eh ,Google. Actually they are.

After that I worked for a travel startup. They also relied on Google for finding them customers. Their cumulative cost per acquisition was also about x10 the lifetime value of a customer. Investors made up the difference. And then again. And then again. Google hasn't copied their business model yet. It's probably even worse - it probably means it was worthless. Either way, Covid, put an end to it, anyway.

Yes, new users don't get to see the good stuff.

You should be able to now.
