Print Story flipping a bit
Christmas
By gzt (Sun Nov 07, 2021 at 03:51:20 PM EST) gzt, dissertating, lazy, drinking, travel, funny hats, friggin' intense, flipping a bit (all tags)
I really should have done it sooner, but I'm blaming the pandemic and some other issues for delaying me. But on Friday, finally defended my dissertation and passed. So I flipped that bit.

Based on the work I had in the final version, frankly, I was about a month of hard work away from this, like, quite a while ago. Namely, maybe the beginning of the pandemic. And before that, a good chunk of the rest was just kicking the football along the ground for a while. But, here we go. All done[1].

Not going to go to the graduation. First, it's during a pandemic still. Second, it's the same day as the final for a class I'm teaching, and I could get somebody to cover for me, but I don't care about it that much. If I didn't have to travel 8 hours as well, I might consider it. Actually, maybe I should at least think about logistics: it's Dec 17th, my parents could come, I could go and stay with my parents (only a couple hours away from there and on the way back) for a few days for Christmas, then come back? I don't know if I'd want to be out a whole week, though. Even if I hung around $UNIVERSITY_TOWN for a couple days so I wouldn't spend too much time at $PARENTS, seems like a while to be out. During a pandemic. But I'd get to wear a funny hat.

anyway, my contract ends this spring, have to find something else. Will start looking after the semester ends. willing to relocate. let me know if anybody needs a statistician.

broke out the bottle of dom perignon 2000 that somebody gave me as a wedding present. it was very nice, though it had not been stored in ideal conditions in the interim. I really need to sort out just how high you have to spend to get the "good champagne" effect, because it was an entirely different world than the <$20 ones.

not that I'm drinking. Giving it up for health reasons apart from occasional celebrations. Not really missing it. This counts as a celebratory occasion. But, you know, I should figure out how much I need to splurge.

baseball is over.

other news: it's really nice outside, so i'm going for a run.

[1]: I mean, there are a few little formalities to go - minor revisions, and then you have to have it typeset correctly for the college to accept it, and I need to do all this in like the next two weeks, but those are details, it's a done deal.

So I'm sure I'll screw up some of the details here, but after I retired, a student came to the institution as a pre-doc, to do the last year of her work for a PhD in Poland here in the States with a notable Polish scientist. She had come from India originally.

I dunno if she ever met her local advisor, what with there being a pandemic on.

And then somehow she was in Texas for the blackout, which coincided with the time appointed for a Big Hairy Oral Exam. Which she did on zoom with the power out, using her phone as a hot spot. She passed.

I think she was back in Boston for her defense a few weeks later, which she also passed. So off to Poland to tidy up and thence to a post-doc in the UK.

I have had the Dom and maybe a couple other super-expensive champagne brands, and have yet to be impressed.  My favorite is a ~$30/bottle from my favorite winemaker, technically not champagne due to region.  I'm not sure he makes it anymore, as he sold his main winemaking biz to focus on super obscure wine stuff, which is a big loss to me.

As for the alcohol, I drink rarely and think of it this way: I can buy only the good stuff and still save money in the end.

See you, space cowboy.
