Print Story Gotta Get Back at It

All I’ve been doing here is spewing emotion. Time to talk about the day to day a bit and what’s been going on instead. Not depressing, I promise you.

My wife and I are in our second year in the City of Sin. It’s kind of a terrible place. There is very little sense of history or community here. We have some new friends, many of which are younger than us.

Interesting anecdote that proves I’m an old man: We were at a gathering at one of these new friend’s house. We had a nice pot luck dinner. Drinks afterwards and later in the night I was outside with the smokers, tobacco and otherwise. (Just an aside, other than 3-5 cigars a year, I’ve been off the cigarettes since 2013) We were talking and the subject of my relationship with my wife came up. How long we had been married and such. I indicated we had been married since 1999 and living together since about 1992. One of them went into the house and indicated to my wife that our relationship was older than she was. Apparently I wasn’t supposed to let slip that I’m that old. My wife wears her years lightly. I’ve got a beard that in not too many years from now will let me convincingly play Santa Claus. Not a big deal, but was an interesting contrast. My wife was semi-mortified but forgave me.

The first year here was rough. I don’t do change any near as well as I picture myself handling it in my head. The second year was overall better, other than having to move within Sin City. Our landlord wanted to sell the house. On the plus side, we rented a house with the exact same layout, because in Sin City, they do huge communities all based on 3-5 different house plans. So that made moving easier, but still a pain in the ass.

In October, I left the big vendor I had been working at for 8 years. I’m an industry analyst again. It ain’t all wine and peaches, but it's better than working for the vendor. I can sleep at night and the stress doesn’t make me think I’m gonna have a heart attack.

We got a new dog in October too. Rescued a French bulldog puppy from a breeder rescue service. He was five months old, he's a little over a year now. Fun little guy we named him Ole, as in Olaf. Now we just gotta get more dogs and name them Sven and Lena. :-)

One more year. Then I can go back to a place where there is green and real weather. It will suck not having access to a first city airport and awesome restaurants but my heart yearns to go back to the midwest. I….don’t love big cities, I want to get back to my friends, I want to own a house again. But for now, we have what we have. I’m content our decision to do this was the right one, my wife is thriving at the university.

How are you?

I get variations on “You got sober before I was born/my parents met!” But not yet “before my parents were born.”

Sin City, at least in the 90’s, was a fairly normal smallish city once you were away from the Strip. Too damn hot in the summer though.

Looks like he's got a few recent-ish essays on there. Stopped by his place in 2012 on my motorcycle trip, but he was never on social media so it was tough to keep tabs.
