Print Story Week End Update

In which I type about some stuff. I've seen a lot being written on the short form social media about the limits of such things and positing that perhaps a long form diary or "blog" form might be coming back. In full disclosure I've always not considered what we do here (or at K5 "back in the day") as a blog. Nonetheless I am of a mind that short form social media is dying and yes the long form needs a kick in the ass.

Here in America this is Labor Day weekend.  This is our faux labor holiday because a hundred years ago May Day scared the shit out of the moneyed elites of the day and they decided we needed a holiday that was like May Day, but was not in fact May Day.  We got Labor Day.  Fast forward a hundred years and the Republican Party writes missives that we should thank "job creators" for their hard work.  If I'm not a socialist (and I am not) then I am most certainly radicalized.  That's neither here nor there.

This weekend we had a friend and his wife, who is also a friend, over for drinks and a fire.  I had invited a couple others, but they didn't come over.  We spent about five hours chatting and watching the fire.  I didn't realize the time had gone by. My daughter was working and I thought she was supposed to be out at Midnight, and I said it can't be that late because Daughter-1 isn't home.  And my friend looked at his watch and said "it's 12:30am."  You know you are with a good friend when you can be together for five hours and not realize that five hours went by.  I initially met this friend when working at the same place that I met technician.  It was a good time back in the mid-90s and I came out with a couple good friends.  Technician being one and he let me here.

After thirteen years my fire bowl burnt out.  It started with holes about 1.5 cm in diameter, but those grew to about 2.5 cm.  Last night the fire seemed to have burned out larger and more holes.  Now the bottom looks like someone shot it with buckshot.  So I went out an bought a new one.  That old bowl has provided thirteen years of solid family memories at the cost of $100.  I should bury it near one of the cats.

Tonight we Christened the new bowl (as a non-Christian I assume this is acceptable language).  Shortly before heading out there was a big ruckus at one of the neighbor's houses.  Lots of yelling and shouting.  It stopped, so I figured they figured it out. We went out and sparked our fire and I was sitting having a bourbon.  Then two guys appeared on the road we were over looking.  Then they started yelling and swearing.  My wife looked over and said "you should call the police.'  I waited a few minutes and my younger daughter was started to show discomfort, so I then called the police.  The kids then went into house.  I personally I have no issue with watching people act out in public and in any rare instance I can defend myself especially when I have a fire iron at hand, but if you make my kids afraid I will call the police. I'm not a violent man and certainly use modern conveniences to my benefit.  Anyway the police came and did what they are paid to do.  I assume someone had too much to drink and I hope my neighbors can control their guests better in the future.

Anyway tomorrow is the last day of a four day weekend for me.  I forget to mention I took Friday as a vacation day so that I could deal with chores and enjoy a day or two of the weekend with nothing much to do. Tomorrow should be my free day.

My wife remains with broken arm.  She has an appointment with the orthopedist on Wednesday and we'll learn how she is mending at that time.

(I still refuse to proof read.  Proof reading is for the week.  Moses didn't proof reed the Ten Commandments.)

if God wanted me to proof read He would not have given me such a short attention span.

Christening by lm (2.00 / 0) #3 Mon Sep 03, 2018 at 07:27:51 AM EST
It's the name giving part of the baptismal ceremony. It's long been informally used to indicate giving someone (or something) a "true" name based on its properties or initiating someone (or something) through some sort of ceremony.

I don't know any Christians that would be offended by its informal uses but I'm sure that somewhere there are some out there.

There is no more degenerate kind of state than that in which the richest are supposed to be the best.

Weekend by clock (4.00 / 1) #8 Tue Sep 04, 2018 at 07:26:06 AM EST
We had our semiannual rib festival on Sunday. Lots of good people in attendance. It feels good to be with friends now and again.

And yes, I'm all about the Isle of Blogging concept. I think RSS is going to make a comeback as services like that bird place become less and less stable.

I agree with clock entirely --Kellnerin

I ended up with a three and a half day weekend by georgeha (4.00 / 1) #9 Wed Sep 05, 2018 at 03:26:28 PM EST
we had to get seventeen_year_old her physical, and I have a lot more flexibility in my schedule than my wife does, so I took her.

It was a good weekend, we camped a night with my parents, had a lot of time without kids, and just enjoyed ourselves.
