...Frankly I don't give a damn day

My contract ended on the 16th. There seems to be a lot of jobs out there but have not landed one yet. Had 2 phone interviews so far and just missed on both occasions. This is not a big deal as I have a part time project which can keep me busy and I've been promised work worth another few thousand over November.

What I'm reading

The Last Kingdom Series by Bernard Cornwell. Very readable historical fiction series where he manages to slot his main character (Uthred) into the time of Alfred the Great and the period shortly thereafter, when England was under continual threat from the Vikings yet gradually changed from being a set of smaller kingdoms (Mercia, Wessex, East Anglia, Northumbria) into England as we more or less know it today. Read all 11 over about a week, so waiting for the next one. The section at the end of each book which explains what really happened at the time is also quite interesting.

All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness (Discovery of WitchesShadow of Night, Book of Life)
Another 'historical' series based on the premise that there are 3 other races of human (Daemon, Vampire and Witch) and their effect on Western History seen mainly through the actions of Diana, a witch who finds an important document in the Ashmolean Library and travels through time to recover the missing pages from that document. Again an interesting read, improved by the fact that the historical background is thoroughly researched and explained. The supernatural aspect of the books is arguably the flimsiest part, but you can't have everything. Times Convert, a sequel does pretty much the same thing with flashbacks to the American Revolution

Having a weird 'should be happy but feeling glum' day today. Kids winning school awards, daughter has done something a bit stupid but there is a way up, money coming in, have bodacious girlfriend so not sure why I'm down. Only downside is that girlfriend is a victim of her own success and we don't get as much time together as the needier side of me wants.

Maybe it's because Winter Is Coming (and I'm not as frequently as I want to)
