The Thicket by Joe Lansdale. In early twentieth century Texas, a teenage teams up with bounty hunters to catch the bandits who have abducted his sister.
Really loved this book. I first came across Joe Lansdale as an author of classic Westerns, was never quite as grabbed by his contemporary thrillers. This one felt like a triumphant return to his old style: violent, gritty fantastical. The characters are larger than life but definitely not unrealistically competent: they regularly fuck up but sometimes get lucky. Dialogue is crackling, the villains suitably villainous, and the heroes slightly less villainous.
Definitely not suitable for the triggerable though: lots of sex, violence and sexual violence.
Overall, massively entertaining: I liked it a lot.
Random. Poseable Vitruvian Man action figure.
