From a story on TechDirt, apparently Apple is changing the dock connector on the next iPhone.

So essentially take every cable, accessory, and part you have that attaches to the iPhone via the dock connector and throw it out.  Why?  Space savings.

Now normally I could agree with that.  But phones have reached their size destination. Hell, they have been getting bigger, not smaller. The phones we have today are pretty much around the limit of what you can use as a human.  There is a point where our fingers are just too big.

So really all Apple is doing is ensuring that there is yet another proprietary standard out there for connecting up a phone and that people will have to buy a whole shitload of new cables and other accessories.  If this was any company other than fucking APPLE people would be having a conniption.  Why the FUCK can't they just put a micro-USB port on the god-damn thing to begin with or even better, LEAVE THE FUCKING DOCK CONNECTOR ALONE.

I use a Mac for work.  I have an iPhone.  I am SERIOUSLY considering ditching the Apple products for my personal use.  I'm getting tired of new Apple-only connectors, Apple telling me what I can and cannot do, and Apple charging out the ass for the privilege.  Apple was supposed to be the good guys, but they look more and more like what would have happened in the 90s of Microsoft made hardware too.  Blatant lock-in and telling customers what's good for them.

Fuck you and your walled garden Apple. You are letting your greed and arrogance kill the golden goose.

Seriously? by lm (2.00 / 0) #9 Fri Jun 22, 2012 at 07:00:48 PM EST
The iPhone has been using the same connector since the first generation in 2007.

How many other mobile phone vendors can say the same? It seems like almost every mobile phone I or my immediate family has purchased over the last five years has had a different connector. I've probably got five different variations of USB cables alone, let alone the non-USB proprietary adaptors.

Not to mention that the while the form factor may not change, real estate inside that form factor is precious. If they can reduce the size of the plug by half, that gives them a whole lot more room to interesting things with in the silicon.

The money issue, if the rumors are correct, and the new adaptor will only work with Apple approved devices is a happy side effect for Apple.

But I bet it will take all of two weeks, if that, for adaptors for the old style plugs to the new style plug to start showing up.

Yes, seriously by Gedvondur (2.00 / 0) #10 Fri Jun 22, 2012 at 11:45:33 PM EST
It's not a happy side-effect. It's by design and it's anti-consumer horseshit.  The changes have have been wrought to the USB port are minor at best; easily adaptable and USB is cheap.  As far as I know, Apple is the LAST company to continue to use proprietary connectors. (Mostly because the EU has required that companies use USB for charging)

All of those docks, speakers, and other set-in devices are suddenly useless.  The only reason the old connector was tolerable was because of it's wide adoption.  Sure, Apple gains a little bit of space, but a ton of space? No, not really.  And at the cost of fucking over their customers with more apple-only horse-shit it hardly seems worth it.

Apple's walled garden is looking more and more like an insane asylum with cruel capricious nurses and doctors.  I've only ever owned Apple smart phones and even I am beginning to think of moving somewhere else.  This is an anti-consumer decision with very little upside.

I don't quite get your underlying point by lm (2.00 / 0) #11 Sat Jun 23, 2012 at 07:55:31 AM EST
The only reason that the old connector was tolerable was because it was wides spread but they shouldn't be moving to a new connector? That's kind of silly.

But I do understand the anger and frustration. Anyone with a large number of accessories, if there is no functional adaptor, will be SOL if they get the new product.
