I have a new laptop. In fact, I have two, and together they weigh less than the previous one.

For a number of reasons, I'm doing what I can to undo the intercalations of job and life. I ran into some Mac/PC issues at work, and now have a company-purchased Acer mini-laptop-thingy (more than netbook, but small) with Windows 7 and the latest version of the Nuance dictation software. The dictation software rocks like a rocking thing. I've been using variations on the dictation software for about 10 years, and the advances are phenomenal. Windows 7? Meh.

The other laptop is a personal Macbook Air. Lion. Light. Lovely.

So the MacBook is named Patronus. This is because my last MacBook rose from the ashes, so I named it Fawkes, after the phoenix in Harry Potter. The iPhone I bought a few months ago (jumping from 1 to 4, and wow wasn't that like living in the future) got named Buckbeak, in keeping with the theme. Patronus has a picture of Hermione's otter patronus for the hard drive icon.

Otter, because my mother really liked otters.

It's been a hell of a year. Hell of a 15-month stretch. I've grown up a lot in the last few years, and learned things one should learn long, long before hitting 50. It's so hard to imagine that my life is more than half over, because I finally feel like I'm just starting to get the hang of it. I'm not there yet, but I can see more of where I want and need to be.

Dealing with the distractions of life keeps you from understanding how to live it properly.  Or more precisely reacting to the distractions.  I'm still reacting and will be for a while.

I'm thinking mindfulness is a key component of not losing yourself in the minutia.

I've been trying to figure out the Buddhist philosophy of such things.  I think it was Keynes who said, "in the end we're all dead."

Being present makes it all perceptually longer, I think.

Good on all counts. Congrats, and thanks for the update.

She has effectively checked out. She's an un-person of her own making. So it falls to me.--ad hoc (in the hole)
Congrats on the new [baby/laptop] by iGrrrl (2.00 / 0) #4 Tue May 29, 2012 at 09:04:16 AM EST
Or on starting to finally grow up?

I'm not particularly maudlin, even though it sounds that way.

Will we see you this summer? I hope so!
