I still have my moustache. I know the scientific names of beings animalculous.

Inside: a poll about working out of office.

I need shorts. Gym/lounging shorts and bermuda shorts to wear in public (but not to work or church). I just ordered some gym shorts. I threw on Police Squad! to round out super-saver shipping because they just dropped the price.

I read Two Gentlemen of Lebowski over the weekend. http://www.runleiarun.com/lebowski/ You will have to look around elsewhere for the PDF. I'm somewhat interested in the guy's other work, mostly Star Wars stuff, but have not yet looked at it. Teh Wife has not seen The Big Lebowski yet, amazingly, so she will not read this until she has. I'm not sure if I have it. I might.

I'm getting behind on studying. Drat.

I'm also getting behind on training. Stuff keeps taking up my evenings. My shoulder felt a little wonky on Saturday and it was slowing me down. I'll see how this week goes and won't plan on getting stronger next week, but I guess I'll be opening with 75kg snatch and 100kg clean and jerk at the competition. I'm hitting both of those pretty easily and consistently, but I'm not consistent enough to hit higher weights for an opener. I might do 5kg jumps to the second attempts and, if I make those, anything after would be gravy. I have enough raw strength to easily get over a 200kg total, but I haven't been jerking and snatching enough to get the conversion. I have the leg strength for more, but I have pathetically weak arms.

I'm in the middle of what seems to be a winning streak in terms of baseball-type games. I've won 2 kickball and 2 softball games in the last month. I don't recall the outcomes of games before this month, because that would be last season, but I think I was winning then, too. I guess it's time to stop changing my underwear to keep the luck going.

Softball: unfortunately, I tweaked my back while swinging at the first softball game, but it was minor. Then I retweaked it swinging at this softball game, and it was minor, but still annoying and nagging me. I think it's because I haven't done any sort of rotational training. I'll have to get out the medicine ball again.

Teh Wife can has bike. This is a step in the right direction. This week is going to be beautiful, weatherwise.

Because of something in toxicfur's diary, I was wondering about whether the rest of you feel like you have to check in at work while out of the office (say, when on holiday or otherwise just taking a day off). Accordingly, there is a poll. And a question about whether it is justified. So: Do you feel you have to check in at work (say, reading and replying to e-mail, getting work done, etc) while you are out of the office? If so, do you feel your type of work justifies this intrusion?

For what it's worth, it's impossible for me to work at home or while on vacation. I cannot check email outside the office. I could dial in on a conference call if I really had to. But I wouldn't.

Yeap, Friday was only 7 hours of vacation by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #1 Mon Jun 28, 2010 at 12:32:01 PM EST
since I had to call into a conference call for a big Midwestern customer, and check email, and keep the devs on their toes.

Did you just bill 7 hours of vacation or the whole 8?

I'll take an extra hour this week, for the birthday party.

That's good.  I sometimes wish we could do it like that.  As it is, half and whole days for vacation only, every thing else whole days.

Of followups to that Bryan Caplan thing on kids. Thought they made a good point: one fundamental problem is that his worldview needs the decision to have kids to be worthwhile from a selfish point of view.

I have office e-mail available on my phone (and at home, etc), but I usually just reply to the fun stuff (like cake warnings and so on) and leave the boring stuff until I return.

What is this "out of the office" that I keep hearing so much about?

Good selection with Police Squad! though.
