Inspired by ana's Holed diary I went out this morning with my camera to get pictures of DC, in Spring, a month after the record setting snowstorms.

Previous entries: one, two, and three.

The snow is still piled high where the front end loaders dumped it.

Baby pothole. Give it a week and it'll be all growed up and eating tires.

This is what 2 feet of snow looks like a month later.

At this time of year the sky is an amazing blue color.

Lovely photographs, by ni (4.00 / 1) #1 Sun Mar 07, 2010 at 11:29:54 AM EST
but I don't think "almighty" is worthy of capitalization, although I suspect it's done often enough. It is not, as far as I know, the gentleman's last name.

MLK had it capitalized by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #2 Sun Mar 07, 2010 at 01:10:27 PM EST
At least he spoke as if it was in the speech that I took the (modified) quote from.

Cute lil' shar pei.

A purpose gives you a reason to wake up every morning.
So a purpose is like a box of powdered donut holes?

What lens by barooo (2.00 / 0) #5 Mon Mar 08, 2010 at 10:15:42 AM EST
was that last one with the flowers?  That's some harsh bokeh...  Nikon 18-200VR?  Lovely pastel colors in the foreground though.

The background blur by barooo (2.00 / 0) #7 Mon Mar 08, 2010 at 10:57:53 AM EST
all the grass and sticks have a pretty harsh blur effect.  Distracting.

Whaaa? Is this some new thing? by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #8 Mon Mar 08, 2010 at 11:16:04 AM EST
Shallow depth of field is unavoidable when shooting macro outdoors, handheld, in natural light. You need to freeze motion (otherwise everything is blurred), which requires opening up the lens (which shallows depth of field).

Having the background out of focus also removes distractions. An interesting effect is shallow depth of field at ranges of feet rather than inches.

Read up on depth of field in photography.

What I was saying was by barooo (2.00 / 0) #13 Mon Mar 08, 2010 at 11:59:32 AM EST
that the background isn't out of focus enough.  To me, it's distracting and if I were shooting that shot and had more aperture available I would have opened it up more.

Yeah. The lens was as wide open as I could get.

Again, I like the nice soft pastel colors in the foreground.
