This weekend's movie was Little Children is a Kate Winslet movie (yes, she does) about a lonely desperate mother of one who meets a lonely desperate stay at home father at the neighborhood park, and they have an affair. It's sort of like a two hour R-rated Desperate Housewives with less likeable characters, including an ex-cop and a sex offender and the sex offender's mom and a trio of perfect moms and some other cops and some skatepunks. The neighborhood reminded me of the AFs place, well to do, but with no people of color (apparently there were furriners in teh AF's complex, I didn't see them at the pool). I liked it, but I felt that there were too many characters in it, I should read the novel.
In book news, I found Pynchon's latest, Inherent Vice, about a private investigator living in Gordita (Manhattan) Beach in the late 60's-early 70's asked to track down a missing real estate developer. It's similar in feel to Vineland, which had several parts take place in LA in the late 60's early 70's. For Pynchon, it's accessible.
At our local library, I saw Beevor's D-Day, so I had to pick it up. It's another thick one, pretty good, though misleading, as it goes from just before D-Day until the liberation of Paris. Monty comes off bad.
Sunday was a beerstravaganza, I was kind of in a grouchy mood, so my family was fine with me puttering around in the basement and kitchen. Filling one keg while cleaning and sanitizing a carboy worked out well in parallel, I will do that again. For the record, a keg of honey lager, and a carboy with five gallons of Czech Pilsner. The honey lager dregs were great, when brewing I have to be more careful adding the malt, I scorched some this time. In future beer news, my 1/8th keg of stout had a slight leak, there's a black sticky stalactite of ale near the bung. It still feels full though.
I need to make an order, so I can brew another batch while racking off next Friday. Maybe a Marzen, and or something for Octoberfest. I need to tap that honey lager, maybe tonight.
In other news, tonight I may make Shrimp Creole, since it's Mardi Gras, more or less (I already bought sausage for Pancake Tuesday). I was thinking jambalaya for Friday, I did buy some chicken andouille sausage (heresy) fbut we have plans. Maybe I'll use the sausage for red beans and rice, or make crockpot jambalaya for Monday. I'm also using peeled cooked shrimp (heresy) because at the end of the day, I really don't want to thaw and peel uncooked shrimp.
I made a pair of pants Saturday for the upcoming Renaissance Faire wedding, of the variety called trews. I also made a pouch that it was too wide and shallow. I blame the material, I bought a pack of scraps and the best way to use them was to make a wide, shallow pouch. I'm going to buy some more leather at Hobby Lobby, maybe thinner.
Looks like we'll be stimulating the economy Friday, with the latest cash for clunky appliances deal. I looked at our current refrigerator's manual, it was bought in 1986. Ancient. Let's see what we can find in an Energy Star around 20 cubic feet at Sears. It should be busy.
My daughter's locker was broken into again, she found a soft Old Navy hoodie at Plato's Closet, it was only $10, but someone took it our of her locker. It's an annoyance, though in the greater scheme of things, it beats paying $7000 a year for tuition.
