Print Story Strange behaviour from Skype

So, I was chatting to somebody on Skype the other day. Using the IM thingy.

This was at home.

There was no way I would have talked with this person on my computer at work. It was not a work conversation.

I was busy working away today, middle of the day, and up pops a notification from Skype. "Message from ******"

I click on it, and in front of my eyes up starts popping the conversation I'd had the other night. Not my side of it, just the replies. About 2 hours worth of IMing fills the screen.

About 1/2 an hour later, up it pops again. With the rest of the conversation. Again, not my side of it, just the replies.

Very weird.

  1. Why send it? Yes, that computer didn't see it. It wasn't even logged in. There was no way on earth any of that text should have shown up on that computer.
  2. Where the hell was it logged? Why is Skype keeping a record of my conversations?
  3. Is this little issue why the whole system's been down for most of the day?

Mistaken resends maybe? by gpig (2.00 / 0) #1 Wed Dec 22, 2010 at 05:09:06 PM EST
Skype resends IM if it fails to send, and can do so a long time after the fact -- maybe it thought it needed to do so when it actually didn't.

In answer to your second question, logs are in either

or the equivalent under Documents and Settings if you're on Windows. I don't know of any evidence that Skype routinely log IM traffic on their servers, though.

Didn't Skype crash today?

Back in the day when ICQ started trying out sending people messages they received when offline once they were back online, you'd get stuff like that.  ICQ would think a whole back and forth conversation wasn't successful and days later you'd get it as if you were offline and missed a bunch of messages.
