INSIDE: question about proof reading, copy editing

Not for me, but anybody know anything about getting into freelance proof reading or copy editing?

Ran into person who coordinates, uh, stuff, on the street at lunch, mildly embarrassed because I was stuffing my gob with a danish, said hey, asked about how soon I'd be able to hear something, she said soon, they're talking to [recruiter] about something, but she didn't really tip her hand, but it's still a good sign. Worst case, offering stuff to somebody else and waiting for acceptance before letting me know. Best case, wrangling with paperwork and don't want to say something before it gets out. Most likely case, still thinking?

Test on Monday. Should be okay. Just statistics. Whatevs. Not going to disrespect the test, though. Will study, work hard, etc.

Listening to Damaged by Black Flag today.

I wish I had a 70sbig.com shirt. Not, you know, strongly, but it would be nice.

How I Met Your Mother is getting sappy. Okay, sappier. This really has to be the last season. I mean, seriously.

They chose a bishop to replace our old one. Consecration will be at my parish. I've been to an episcopal consecration before. I've also been to a diaconal ordination. Never a priestly ordination, though. Anyway. Sometime in May.

Someday I'll have a decent bench press. Someday.

Budget meeting today! With Teh Wife, not at work.

Gym at work is opening soon. Probably not going to buy in. They will have a bench press, that's the only usable equipment, but they probably won't really have any iron and the bar is probably crap.

MEET THE NEW BOSS. SAME AS THE OLD BOSS. Man, that song is great.

Hmm. It's probably about time to look at exit survey info. There hasn't been much comedy in them lately, but maybe something came up that I haven't seen yet.

Blah blah blah.

Tell your "friend" that proofreading is one word.

Yes, I do know about those things and the jobs that go with them.

Here's a few things to think about.

1.  Copy editing/proofing doesn't pay shit, even full time. But your friend probably knew that already.

2. You either need experience or educational background, such as an English degree.

3. The best and likely only way in our current shit unemployment position in the States is to know someone.  Freelancers keep busy by having a list of contacts that know them and can get them work.  You can try cold, but honestly, not likely to succeed.

4.  Your friend has to actually be good at this stuff.  You can't do this just because you know how to read.  Or write for that matter.  I write for a living and I can't proofread or copyedit other people shit for shit.
