For some time, my Dell Laptop has had problems with its power supply. I had to waggle the output lead to ensure it worked. Yes, I know that you can get replacements off ebay for £20-30, but being as my employment had been sporadic virtually non-existant over the last few months I decided to see if I could fix it myself.
Unfortunately the bricks that Dell use for its transformers are not screwed together, but glued together. Using a screwdriver as a chisel, I managed to prise theribcage casing apart without too much damage.
Peeling back the insulation round theartery output power lead revealed the problem; a hole in the wall of the artery a stray couple of strands from the screen in the cable had been wrapped under the insulation and touched one of the two main cables intermittently; obviously a birth manufacturing defect. Wrapping insulation tape around once the screen had been properly pulled back fixed the issue.
Putting thechest wall case back together with surgical insulation tape and powering up, I was pleased to see a regular heartbeat green led without any signs of pain from the patient. Now fully mobile, the unit is now happily pushing blood amps around the body of the laptop. Microsurgery Superglue to neatly seal up the operating area will be applied soon.
Fortunately, my first paycheck arrives today, so I won't have to do this again anytime soon
