"Since no one at home approved of weapons,
I bought it secretly, and as I walked along,
I felt the heavy weight of it, inside my pocket."

First Love
by Joan Margarit

In the dreary Girona of my seven-year-old self,
where post-war shop-windows
wore the grayish hue of scarcity,
the knife-shop was a glitter
of light in small steel mirrors.
Pressing my forehead against the glass,
I gazed at a long, slender clasp-knife,
beautiful as a marble statue.
Since no one at home approved of weapons,
I bought it secretly, and as I walked along,
I felt the heavy weight of it, inside my pocket.
From time to time I would open it slowly,
and the blade would spring out, slim and straight,
with the convent chill that a weapon has.
Hushed presence of danger:
I hid it, the first thirty years,
behind books of poetry and, later,
inside a drawer, in amongst your panties
and amongst your stockings.
Now, almost fifty-four,
I look at it again, lying open in my palm,
just as dangerous as when I was a child.
Sensual, cold. Nearer my neck.

This one played pretty poorly (didn't even get half the traffic of the Ginsberg), but I think it's nifty.

I suspect the title turned people off. If it had been translated as "Old Dude Talks About His Favourite Knife (And Ponders Mortality)" I think this poem would have gotten more attention.

Oh well.

I don't think a poem can really be judged by it's title, and even if I don't like or get a poem, i've lost very little.

You can probably drop the "poem of the day:" from the titles at this point.

I listen to This American Life, and every single show Ira Glass says "As you know, each show we choose a theme..." The as you know bugs me. If you know I know, why tell me again? If you're saying it for the benefit of new listeners, then they obviously don't know.

The PotD Committee will take it under advisement. by Beechwood 45789 (2.00 / 0) #4 Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 02:09:46 AM EST
I've done one non-poem post so far, so the fact that it's a poem isn't always a given. But I see your point.
