Very cool. Well composed. by greyrat (4.00 / 1) #1 Tue Aug 21, 2007 at 03:10:15 AM EST
I particularly like that it's in portrait format.

I wonder why it works better in portrait format, though. Is it related to the way the shells are arranged, or the way the depth of field helps you focus on the orange shell, or something else?

I'd say 'Yes' to all your reasons, and by greyrat (2.00 / 0) #8 Wed Aug 22, 2007 at 03:28:01 AM EST
I think I like the portrait format because it's unexpected with this subject matter.

Also n.b. rdskutter's comments on depth of field. My comment in that vein would be that I'm slightly uncomfortable with the lack of focus to the lower left. It warps the composition for me because I expect that large shell supporting the red one to be in focus. But that's hardly a big deal.

Nice arrangement. I like it.

The soft focus towards the top right of the frame bugs me slightly... was this taken using a macro lens, or could you get a bigger depth of field if you wanted?

which does have a very close focus range, so you do almost get macro-style small depth of field.

I agree that a slightly wider DOF would have been better; I should have really taken this one with a tripod but I'm pretty sure it was hand-held.

I look regularly your pics and I like most of them, even though I rarely comment on them. This one is especially pretty.

Cheers.

It's just an excuse to show off and massage my ego, really :-)

More pics to come in the next week or so, so stay tuned...
