Today's photo is taken on a recent holiday to the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. I'll post a few more over the next week or so.

The subject is the Callanais Standing Stones, an astonishing collection of slabs of rock on a small hill on the west coast of the island. The one in the center is just under five metres tall.

This one is REALLY good by nebbish (4.00 / 1) #2 Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 04:33:19 AM EST
You've resisted the temptation to go for detail on the stones and got a very powerful image. Composition is really balanced and the sky is fantastic. Your best yet IMHO.

I wasn't very pleased with my attempts to get a good shot when I was there, but it's great that the end result seems to work.

Wandering around the stones in the rain was worth it, then :-)

Philosophical Question: by greyrat (2.00 / 0) #17 Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 09:55:44 AM EST
How do we know they are comely if they are invisible? Or sky clad for that matter?

They're witches!  Have you never seen Charmed or Ek Brittland[1] in the The Wicker Man?

[1] Shame youtube doesn't have the nekkid dance bit Ek does to try and seduce Edward Woodwoodward.

I'm sorry. There's something wrong with it. by greyrat (2.00 / 0) #9 Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 06:22:41 AM EST
And I am mad at myself for not being able to put my finger on it. It's got something to do with the contrast or the lack of detail on the stones. It's like its not a pure profile, and it's not a picture with detail. Or maybe that central spot is too bright. Damn it! I like the composition -- the grass as well as the stones, and this style of composition is one of my standards when photographing in cemeteries. But there's something that is not right...

Needs more sky maybe?

hmm by Merekat (2.00 / 0) #10 Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 06:30:44 AM EST
Sky where it is, stones better a bit to the right, for me.

Not that I could actually take a photo this good in a million years, mind.

I keep looking at it and now I'm thinking: by greyrat (2.00 / 0) #12 Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 06:38:51 AM EST
"If I had this in the dark room, I'd reprint it and burn that bright center spot a bit." I'm thinking that it's the contrast there. The picture overall is extremely good, the sky is spectacular. Maybe pushing the contrast down will turn it on for me.

I'll post the original tomorrow by stark (4.00 / 1) #13 Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 06:51:22 AM EST
and you can have fun reworking it, as well as being disturbed by how much I have tweaked it... :-)

It's creepy. As I continue to look at it, by greyrat (2.00 / 0) #14 Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 06:56:03 AM EST
the composition continues to grow on me, while something about it disturbs me even more...

It'll be the witches by stark (4.00 / 2) #15 Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 07:00:17 AM EST
You need to watch out for them, hiding behind the stones like that...

That's fine. I'm not expecting anyone to agree. by greyrat (4.00 / 1) #20 Wed Aug 15, 2007 at 04:07:35 AM EST
I'm just pissed because I can't put my finger on the problem I sense for myself. I'd also point out that I think highly of stark's photographic abilities, which makes me doubly pissed off -- at myself.
