By the big chunk of white on the wet paint sign - maybe the wood's come out too dark? It's a tricky one.

Can be tricky. Underexpose the wood, or overexpose the sign? In chemical processes photography you might choose a different grade (?) of film. Not sure if there is an equivalent for digital photography. Something to ask a pro wedding photographer, with the white dresses and black suits its an issue the deal with daily.

Something less contrasty maybe. You could probably do something in Photoshop.

I did fiddle briefly with curves in PS to lighten it a little; perhaps more is needed. I quite liked the gloomy feel, though...

You hear a lot about perfect exposures, but when it comes down to it it's what you like best that counts.
