Ah, drugs! Where would modern music be without them? So many songs would have never been written without them... and so many artists would still be alive if it weren't for their seductive allure and fatal results.

The theme for MFC thirteen is drugs. But please note you don't have to do them to participate. Read on...

Update [2007-11-14 23:53:9 by 606]: Extension! One week only! Now due on Monday, Nov 19.

Update [2007-11-23 20:19:28 by 606]: It's time to vote! VOTE HERE!.

The history of humanity is riddled with drugs. Mystics and shamen of almost every human tribe are documented using drugs like psylocibin mushrooms, tobacco, ayheuasca, and hundreds of others for the purpose of obtaining spirit knowledge and visions.

Of course in today's world of convenience and technology drugs are plentiful, potent, and usually served without prior education. Be it "hard" drugs like meth or cocaine, "soft" drugs like marijuana, or popular favorites like nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol. Yes, those are drugs. Deal with it.

For a while many musicians and artists experimented with interesting drugs to try and bring out new creative visions. This was called the 1960s and its results were a lot of albums that make you go whoa, what the hell is this and why is the purple monkey dishwasher green nothing furiously?. This era can be summarized by viewing the party scene from Midnight Cowboy. The drugs back then were so amazing they could make even The Monkees interesting.

But after a while people got boring and they switched to drugs like speed and coke and heroin in the 70's that made artists jittery, assholes, and dead in that order.

Today there are so many kinds of drugs in the world we're still trying to get a grip on it. All the old illegal favorites are around along with fun new prescription drugs like ambien, prozac, oxycontin (or as I call them, Limbaugh-pops), fentanyl, percoset, viagra... and oh exploitable OTC meds like codeine and DXM.

Even today musicians are finding new drugs and singing* about them. (* for some definition of sing).

Your task is to make a song involving drugs. That is, you can create a song about drugs, or you can create a song while on drugs (NOT RECOMMENDED). You can also cover a song by an artist who was really into drugs (and by really into, I mean died cuz of them).

Entries are due in one month, Monday, November 12, 2007.

Yeah, we'll probably extend that but, like, pretend we're not gonna, okay?

I'll get some song hosting set up soonish...

Dude, I'm sorry, but by wiredog (4.00 / 3) #2 Wed Oct 10, 2007 at 05:12:09 AM EST
There were no drugs that could make The Monkees interesting.  Stoned enough you couldn't change the channel, perhaps, but not interesting.

Oh, and as to why is the purple monkey dishwasher green nothing furiously? Well, he could hardly do it calmly, now could he?  I mean, given what was going on and all.

Not The Monkees the show but The Monkees the band. Have you seen HEAD? I was quite entertained by it. I love how naive and silly the late 60's were.

So many MFCs, so many opportunities for Dead Kennedys covers, so few actual covers resulting.

Where do all those Texas rapper guys get their codeine-ated cough syrup? If you're going to rob a pharmacy you wouldn't normally think of grabbing the grape cough meds compared to what else you could find.

SMUT is on a one year hiatus, and you go ahead and post an MFC theme which almost every extant SMUT song qualifies for.

if anyone wants to take a stab at E is for Yuppies, Le Mescaline or In Montreal, they should feel free.

here: http://www.divshare.com/download/2693463-03d

with the caveat that if the deadline moves (and I get a chance to work on it some more) I may replace it, with an improved version.

It's a pretty straight cover of Bat Country by Avenged Sevenfold.

Appologies to the subjection of listeners to my voice (and my piss poor guitar playing, it was and remains well out of my comfort zone in terms of playing).

that the entries are due at 11:59 pm on Monday in whatever timezone the musician happens to be in?

My entry is almost done, but I still have to record all my MIDI tracks to HD and master it (and by master, I mean throw on an EQ, compressor, and pray).

here's my submission, a cover of the Placebo song "Special K", which in case you're clueless and/or not as trigger-happy with wikipedia as some are (like myself) it's worth noting it's basically about Ketamine.

Now, I fucked up majorly while recording this, largely because I recently broke the headphone jack on my Cowon iAudio X5 (whose line-in I used to quickly last-minute record this) so I couldn't listen to how it actually heard things itself, ie. clipping galore.  But, after a few obviously failed takes and some rather emo stuff going on in my life right now and stress and etc, and that I didn't really think I was putting enough emotion into the song, at the end of this take I just went for it and threw my guitar.  Not entirely stupidly, it's completely okay, but because of that I'm unwilling to give up this take, dammit.

Oh noes! by skippy (2.00 / 0) #37 Mon Nov 12, 2007 at 04:39:49 PM EST
