I'm not sure what to make of this.

I've been working overtime plus doing extra hours on this freelance web gig. The freelance web work is fun, and I'm excited about the possibilities. Every graphic I design for them, they love. Either I'm that good, or they are easy. Whatever - the money is good.

Downside to all this is I'm tired. I passed out tonight after our chicken parmesan dinner.

After my hour and a half nap, my six-year-old son points to the kitchen sink and says "Mom, are you going to do the dishes?"

I replied with "duh, you think I didn't notice?"

Hunh? Is my son turning into some bossy macho jerk? Or is this just the beginning of OCD? Or maybe he's heard me tell him to do his chore, take out the garbage, enough that he thinks it's appropriate for him to do the same to me?

He's a funny kid.

IMHO, he's just trying to be helpful by Dr H0ffm4n (4.00 / 7) #1 Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 12:01:31 AM EST
He knows you do the dishes, and thinks maybe you forgot because you were tired. So he's helpfully reminding you. He asked you if you were going to do the dishes. That's not the same as telling you to do the dishes, not from a six year old.

I agree with the Doktor. by greyrat (4.00 / 5) #3 Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 03:17:25 AM EST
You missed a fine opportunity to make him into a real man too: "No honey, I'm just very tired today. Would you do them? Or would you help me with them?" That would get him to either be more sensitive to your needs, or at least not 'not make the mistake' of mentioning it again.

six year old manners by lm (4.00 / 4) #4 Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 03:23:56 AM EST
It all depends on how the six year old was raised. Some people grow up being to told to do things by beings asked ``are you going to ...?'' I know adults that still give orders this way. It drives me up the freak show wall.

Kindness is an act of rebellion.

And some people are just sensitive by Dr H0ffm4n (4.00 / 1) #9 Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 06:20:25 AM EST
When a six year old gets a rise from asking "are you going to ... ?", they are more likely to be hitting the prejudicial sensitivity in the adult than being obnoxiously controlling themselves.

I'm just pointing out that direct commands are relative to dialect.

Maybe he's got a favorite dish in there by DesiredUsername (4.00 / 1) #2 Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 03:05:47 AM EST
I remember Number One couldn't stand it if we had dishes in the drying rack. Dirty dishes--OK, clean dishes not put away--panic mode.

That's kinda cute. by calla (2.00 / 0) #21 Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 04:21:13 PM EST
Maybe my little guy would have the same reaction if the dishes weren't safely tucked away in the dishwasher.

Does Number One have other issues with things not in their proper place?

Not specifically, no by DesiredUsername (4.00 / 1) #22 Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 04:24:08 PM EST
But he's pretty anal and is humorless on many topics, such as Daylight Saving Time. This is in contrast to Number Two.

Did you do the dishes?

It's one of my chores. by calla (2.00 / 0) #18 Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 04:05:19 PM EST
I don't like going to bed with dishes in the sink. So after I finished my web work, I did the dishes, made everybody's lunches, and took a shower.

Max's chore is the garbage, and sometimes he helps with unloading the dishwasher. He likes loading, but gets frustrated because he can't reach the sink without a chair and has to climb off the chair to put dishes in the dishwasher.

Taking out the garbage is a better chore for him.

routine by webwench (4.00 / 6) #6 Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 03:40:34 AM EST
If your routine has always been to do the dishes right after dinner, and on this particular occasion, not doing them right away is unusual, he was just noticing the break in routine and asking about it. Kids this age don't carry the same set of baggage we might carry regarding division of housework labor; to your kidlet, asking about the break in dish routine has the same significance as him asking whether you and he plan to go to the park Sunday like you always do, or [insert other innocuous routine activity here].

Getting more attention than you since 1998.

I think it was a combination of by calla (2.00 / 0) #19 Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 04:14:45 PM EST
  • change of routine (he is very much a creature of habit)
  • making use of the opportunity to be like mom and nag about a chore not being done.
You are dead on as far as routines. He's a stickler for routine. I suspect a large part of that is ADHD, as well as his age.

Thanks

"No. You are."

that would teach him a valuable lesson in keeping his mouth shut.

As long as there's no 200 year old family heirlooms I don't see why he couldn't pull up a chair and get his hands wrinkled.

He'd probably think it was fun.

if you're a good dishwasher, you'll always have work, and never starve (as long as you don't mind eating leftovers out of the bus pans).

And then wash the dishes while she fellates you, instead of waiting for her to finish the dishes.

It really depends on the tone by paperdoll (4.00 / 1) #14 Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 07:45:37 AM EST
but it is a good segue to introducing it as a chore.  If he's never done dishes do them with him a few times then next time your too tired he can do them himself.

As I explained to Phil, the ex-canuck, by calla (2.00 / 0) #20 Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 04:18:42 PM EST
my boy is still a little too short for the dishes. He gets frustrated with having to climb up and down off the chair from the sink to the dishwasher.

He's terrific with the garbage, and helping with groceries. I've just got to keep extending his chores as he grows.

Thanks
