Coffee.

Anybody else find it hard to read the text on their screens through blurry strained eyes before the first coffee?  How about the second coffee?

Substance addictions get a bad rap, don't they?  Painted with a wide brush,  addictions have their own 12 step programs, support groups, and contribute to the decay of society.  I suggest that we take this time to celebrate our addictions to coffee, to acknowledge our dependencies on this wonderful substance.

I raise my cup - to coffee!

Zero, you crackhead. by Rogerborg (2.00 / 0) #1 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 04:00:34 AM EST
I only indulge in harmless recreational substances, like a nice pipe of opium to calm my nerves and stop my hands shaking before I strangle prostitutes.

3 - 5 ish per day by Bob Abooey (2.00 / 0) #2 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 04:05:59 AM EST
I have about a half cup first thing in the morning before heading to the gym. Then I have a full cup with breakfast at about 7:00. Another cup at around 10:00ish, then 2:00ish, then sometimes one at 6:30 when I arrive back at the YMCA.

It's not a problem though, I'm not hurting anyone but myself and I could quit anytime I want to, so just get off my back about it.

Warmest regards,
--Your best pal Bob

I salute you! by glamorgan (2.00 / 0) #3 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 04:26:02 AM EST
5ish is a good number.  You have obviously worked hard to develop your addiction to such lofty levels.

Congratulations.

I fail it by Cloaked User (2.00 / 0) #5 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 04:30:06 AM EST
Weekdays, I have one cup of coffee a day, and one or possibly two cups of tea. Weekends, I generally have one or two cups of coffee.

I can read just fine without any though.

This is not a psychotic episode. It is a cleansing moment of clarity.

Are you talking the standard 8 oz cup? by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #6 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 04:55:09 AM EST
The little 5 oz coffee cup, the big 12 oz commuter travel mug, or the ginormous SUV zied ginormous commuter travel mug.

At home, I fill our Chinese coffee maker to get "7" cups out, and drink about half in my travel mug. Lately I've been having another mug at work.

Terrance McKenna (who is a wack guy, but interesting) postulates that drugs tend to change in dosage until they become socially acceptable and minimize social damage, he thinks sugar, tobacco and coffee wreaked havoc on Europe when they first became available (mid 1500s?). That doesn't really explain alcohol or opiates, though.

Good point by glamorgan (2.00 / 0) #7 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 05:05:59 AM EST
I never really specified cup size, did I?  I think we can all agree that 5oz is not a true coffee cup size.  Its really meant for those tea-drinking friends of ours in the UK.

I have not yet had my second cup (currently brewing, ready in a few minutes) so the conversion math is beyond my abilities.  It sounds like a good amount though, enough coffee to keep you going for a while.  I salute you!

Interesting theory, makes sense to a certain extent.  I think the difference is the extent of the 'high' that coffee/sugar/tobacco delivers compared to alcohol/opiates.  I've yet to have a coffee buzz anywhere near Rogerborg's opium pipe.  I'm trying my hardest.

The ounce is a unit of weight by hulver (4.00 / 2) #9 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 05:43:03 AM EST
Not volume.

So, 5oz isn't a cup of coffee by any standards. Unless you're weighing the actual container.

Jeez it's no wonder you guys keep crashing things into mars.

"10 pints, and we're moving at 7 litres per second."

Rather grumpy, eh? by glamorgan (2.00 / 0) #10 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 05:53:37 AM EST
Have you had your coffee yet today? Or tea?  Sometimes the caffeine helps take the edge off a rough Monday.  You should try it.

Yep by hulver (2.00 / 0) #11 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 06:02:14 AM EST
I've just finished my fourth pint of tea. That's weighs about 66.76 ounces, or has a volume of 64 US fluid ounces.

I have lost all respect for you. by ambrosen (2.00 / 0) #15 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 06:30:41 AM EST
There are 20 fluid ounces in a pint, and a fluid ounce is 28.35 ml.

Anything else is just ridiculous cross-Atlantic propoganda.

coffee intake by Merekat (2.00 / 0) #8 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 05:11:09 AM EST
Variable. Between 4-8 coffees a day, less than half that at the weekend, where coffee is defined as single espresso, black, no sugar.

Still fall asleep at my desk but not in my bed.

I had the same issue by glamorgan (2.00 / 0) #17 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 06:53:12 AM EST
Earlier this year I was suffering from the same problem.  Tired all day but not able to sleep at night.  The solution for me was to stop all coffee intake for 2 weeks.  Fuck, that was hard.  After the first 2 weeks I start drinking ..... decaf.  Sorry to admit it, but it's true.  After a few weeks of decaf I started slowing introducing my drug of choice back into the bloodstream at the rate of one cup a day.  I'm back to two cups a day, with maybe some tea in the afternoon.

I do that a couple of times a year. It doesn't work for me.

Have you though about switching? by glamorgan (2.00 / 0) #19 Mon Jul 17, 2006 at 07:08:09 AM EST
To a different substance to abuse?  Maybe a good depressant in the evening to help you sleep.  Alcohol is the obvious choice here, but let your imagination run wild.
