it hurtss the eyes

A quick, happy tea fueled diary involving the mystery of Belter, Magic Realm, Irish_girl and her sube, and less.

Poll: multipoll Favorite game designer, Meta missing Hussians?

I'm tired, tired and weary, from many different things. Fortunately, management is replacing lots of flourescent bulbs that were burned or twisted out, turning our rank but cozy code mine into a brightly lit warehouse. We all know how much bright lights helps you feel better when you're tired.

There was a modest email storm about this, but I reckon if the most you can complain about is bright glaring lights, you don't have it too bad.

I was looking at my copy of Belter the other day. Belter is a GDW board game (designed by Marc W. Miller, who also did Traveller) about mining the asteroids, mostly economic in nature with a bit of combat. Now, I don't recall ever playing this, but I see marked up sheets and such (the market for ore and gases for instance) that look like my handwriting. Either I played it and forgot about it, or the previous owner has writing that looks like mine.

I see that Magic Realm has a java engine, I may play with that a few times, quicker than setting up the whole game, if worse for my wrists.

In a final gaming tidbit, I'm still searching for my $10 or under copy of Panzer Leader on ebay. I'm getting closer.

Irish_girl stopped by last night while Mrs. Ha was at dance class, so I gave her a Jaffa cake, there are only two left (four year old likes to dis-assemble them and eat the chocolate coating separately) She ended up buying a Subaru, a 94 I think.  She's tired from her new job and moving home, and she and Mrs. Ha had a nice long uninterupted chat while I dealt with the brats. It was nice to have adult company.

I am too tired to do much more on this diary, and I still have my WFC entry, "How Ed Hulver Got Kissed, Got Wild and Got Some Little People" to finish.

I heartily approve of the '94 Suburu by lm (2.00 / 0) #1 Thu May 04, 2006 at 08:33:30 AM EST
They're inexpensive and, wouldn't you know, built to stay that way.

Looks like your future at work is so bright you have to wear shades.

Adult company can be interesting.

I'm envious, I miss my Sube by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #2 Thu May 04, 2006 at 08:35:53 AM EST
though I think they cost a little more to fix than other Japanese econoboxes, and use a little more fuel, all do to the 4wd. Plus, the 92's and earlier were real prone to rust, at least with our salty winters.

They aren't as popular in the US by lm (2.00 / 0) #3 Thu May 04, 2006 at 08:40:08 AM EST
Which means that they don't get returns to scale like Toyota and Honda with regards to parts nor a large pool of labor to compete with each other on price.

If Suburu came out with an Impreza sedan with a diesel engine, I'd probably buy it tomorrow.

They're everywhere around here by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #4 Thu May 04, 2006 at 08:46:31 AM EST
but they're awesome in the snow, especially when you park on the street that has plowed up drifts and such.

I want to get another one, when it's time to replace the Tercel, maybe I'll have a little more money in five years.

Which model of Impreza? by lm (2.00 / 0) #8 Thu May 04, 2006 at 09:51:58 AM EST
You can an Impreza sedan tricked out to essentially be a WRX. but that's not what I'm interested in.

The diesel comes in because I like the idea of being able to make my own fuel in my garage.

Also, a diesel engine typically has greater power at the low end of the spectrum. A TDI VW, for example, will toast the same model VW with a VR6 engine up to about 50mph give or take. This makes the car more fun to drive in the types of circumstances that I'm most likely to be found in.

But best of all, diesel fuel has more energy per gallon meaning that my mileage will be higher and the distance I can go on a single tank of gas will be longer.

If you have any ninja skills left in your burnt out husk of a corpse, there is a nearly-new copy of Panzer Leader sitting on the top shelf of my brother's bedroom closet, in mostly mint condition.

Ah, Fallen Empires by houser2112 (4.00 / 1) #28 Fri May 05, 2006 at 08:45:05 AM EST
The only good card to come out of that set was Hand of Justice.  Combined with Kjeldoran Outpost (Homelands, I think? Alliances?) the land that allowed you to pump out 1/1 white soldier tokens, it was quite the powerful combo.  It made quite a nice addition to my White Power deck. :)
