Print Story Being Drunk With Family
I'm not sure exactly when family get-togethers became an excuse to down a bottle of rye, but I'm certainly not against this new tradition.

It was probably at the point when all my siblings became legal drinking age (or in the case of my sister when she got close enough that my dad started not to care.)

I'm sitting on the couch holding a tumbler of rye with Bobbi-the-friend's legs in my lap. My sister is sitting on the floor pouring rye from a coffee cup into a shot glass, downing it, and chasing it with Coke. My brothers and their friends aren't drinking but seem chemically augmented. We're a gang of nerds on a Saturday night chatting about nothing.

Sis: If I meet a guy who's last name is Unit then I'm gonna name our kid Gina so everyone'd call her G. Unit.
Jay: Gina is too good a name. Call her Gertrude.
Me: First you have to find a man with the last name Unit. What's his first name, Massive?
Jay: What's Gertrude's middle name gonna be? I'm thinking Metric.
Me: Gertrude Metric Unit.
[thirty seconds of insane laughing follows]

I love my family.

Project: Pulse Wave Party is underway. I've got two more proto-songs that are passable and one I'm still restructuring in Live but has some serious potential, though I think it needs another section to fill it out. I would really like some musique concrete submissions. This is your chance to have your ramblings immortalized in song. Don't delay, send them today!

In Other Other News

Picked up Richie Hawtin's DE9|Transitions CD/DVD, which while technically a DJ mix breaks new ground in that it's recorded in 5.1 surround sound and each "song" is made up of at least four songs being played simultaneously and fitted into place using complex EQ filters and timed gates. Hawtin's style is very minimal and subtle, and it can be challenging but fascinating.

The making-of section shows Hawtin building the mix with Ableton Live once again demonstrating that little program's absolutely revolutionary effect on electronic music.

What's funny is that in one section of the mix Hawtin uses some spoken word samples. In particular he's using a voice from what's obviously a porn video. It's heavily vocoded and filtered to sound like a gigantic demonic robot man. And yet... I know exactly whose voice it is and what production house the video came from. I find this rather disturbing, actually.

Friday is the partay at 256's and Saturday night I'm going to a ravey thing at The Guvernment. Beyond that I'm going to be planning the details of the trip tonight. Expect e-mails and phone calls while I piece together "the plan".

Are you coming down for sure, ni?

I'll hook you up with some musical concrete after I ride home from work today. I promise! And my word is BOND!

Do you want to be listed as a guest vocalist on my album?

A friend of mine just got me the specs on his dad's Minidisc-based concert-taping setup. I'm going to spend some cash and get myself a covert field recording rig! Muhaha!

Sure, why not? by MohammedNiyalSayeed (4.00 / 1) #5 Mon Mar 27, 2006 at 08:11:49 AM EST

Though no guarantees what I'll be providing will actually be *my* voice...

Also, FINALLY, A USE FOR THE MINIDISC RECORDER! I highly suggest bringing a set of drumsticks, and going for a waltz down an alley with trash cans and dumpsters. Fucking dumpsters make some AWESOME percussion sounds. Which you will be required by law to provide use of the samples of, to me.

it's a man's voice directing a woman to do things and I suspect that it is Alex Firestone, but I shan't google him at work.

It Must Be Nice by Improbus (2.00 / 0) #7 Mon Mar 27, 2006 at 09:00:15 AM EST
To have your family members in the same IQ ball park as yourself.  Unfortunately, for me, I am a mutant.  Luckily I am a good mimic so I can play the part of a country boy.

ana has helpfully pointed out that I have a month.

Nothing for sure. I'm a sketchy fuck, and really can't be counted on for much of anything. Hopefully I'll be there. I think it's pretty damn likely, since a housemate of mine is going there to visit his family at exactly the same time, and everything kind of works out well. You'll never extract a promise out of me, though.

I should have probably qualified those dates. CBB was asking about your plans, tho. It looks like Sunday might be the day to visit the Schoolhouse.

i will mentally pencil in guv-plex rave on saturday and schoolhouse on sunday.

if you are the type of person who finds ravey stuff less enjoyable on the brain's manufacturer settings, i'm sure that some after-market add-ons can be acquired at the appropriate time with minimal effort.

or so i hear.
