Amelie

My blunt words and cow-like appreciation are no match for the subtlety and beauty of this gem-like film. The only downside was that reading the subtitles meant I was spending less time looking at the cinematography and expressions. Suffice it to say, 5 stars.

I do have one question though: What is the significance of Georgette (the hypochondriac) and the Stalker breaking up, if break up they did? Every other person Amelie helped was alone--her father, the man who hid his toys as a boy, Mr Dufayel, the grocer's boy, etc. The one case that failed concerned two people in a relationship. Clearly Amelie is not good at relationships, but does this breakup forbode ill for her relationship with Nino? I think it probably does, but the message of the film is contained in Dufayel's video tape: It is better to have loved and etc.

Mrs U demanded that we add another movie/month to our Netflix subscription, so now we can have 3 out at a time. 3 mod 2 is non-zero, so we are interleaving movies on a third Q. I moved a bunch of stuff onto there that I either definitely want to see OR want to force myself to watch and I'm not going to look at that Q again. So movies will just arrive from a mysterious source and I'll have to watch them. Therefore, the poll only applies to the Q under my control.

I think I would like an action movie as the next one, but I don't see any outright action moviii on my Q. The Man Who Would Be Etc is the closest I found, but other WIPeaux are welcome.

It is one of the definitive American action movies.

i can't say that i really loved a whole lot of action movies. but the best movies that also have action seem to be gangster or chinese (ie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). the rest are all entertaining and watchable, not what i'd think of as a really good movie.  maybe unforgiven, if you call that an action movie.

It was ridiculous and laughable by DesiredUsername (2.00 / 0) #20 Tue Feb 07, 2006 at 09:27:00 AM EST
I don't remember all the details, because that was 5.3 years ago, but I remember thinking the fight scenes were stupid and the "give me back my comb" thing sticks out as particularly dumb.

If you really like Johny Dep, or have seen some Ed Wood movies then it might be for you. Otherwise, not that great.

Get Shorty was a fun movie, as I recall. I actually saw that in the old fashioned analog method (the theatre) back in 95 or 96 when it came out.

To Catch A Thief is a fun watch as well. Grace Kelly ~n~ Cary Grant work well together in that one.

Warmest regards,

But that's probably because I have Diebold counting the votes. TMWWBK is the real People's Choice.

I didn't care for it all that much, but then I rarely like Michael Caine in anything. He bugs me the same way that Jack Nicholson does. I can't help but think "Oh, look, there's Michael Caine!" and not "Oh, look! There's $character."

The Road Warrior (aka Mad Max 2) by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #16 Tue Feb 07, 2006 at 08:13:11 AM EST
is the best action film evAr. Mad Max 1 is slower, more like a Greek tragedy.

Ichi the Killer
Audition

Both are extremely violent, gross, and highly offensive. Well recommended.
