Christmas

I'm done now.

So those who care about such things will have heard that last week, about 4 days before Christmas, there was a huge blizzard in Colorado. Closed the Denver airport for a couple days, made a mess of people's travel. Fortunately, we were still a few days from travel, and things straightened themselves out more or less before we had to travel.

Fast forward a week, and whammo! another storm.

Toxicfur digging out the rented car.

It started coming down yesterday morning, canceling dinner plans with a friend. As of this morning it's about 16" deep here at my folk's house. We managed to dig the car out before my dad's friend with the blade on his pickup came for the 2nd time and cleared the driveway. I waited in the street with the car while he plowed the drive, and wondered if the little Mazda 3 would make it up the hill again in the snow.

Hope things get saner before we fly out Sunday morning. We're thinking of getting a hotel closer to the airport for Saturday night, so there's less traveling to do in the morning. Hm. I wonder who has free wifi... Or if there are any rooms to be had, given the weather problems.

New camera is much fun.

Mom went in and got a cast on her foot, and rented a small wheelchair, which works better on the carpet than the secretary chair she was using before. It's gonna be a long 6 weeks for her.

Did I mention that it's still snowing?

You must have MY snow! by me0w (2.00 / 0) #2 Fri Dec 29, 2006 at 12:09:25 PM EST
There is no snow here. None. My brother's girlfriend wanted a white Xmas ... he had to go steal 'snow' from the local hockey arenas. No snow. Nothing. Zip.

Please send it my way.

I'm told... by ana (2.00 / 0) #3 Fri Dec 29, 2006 at 12:11:10 PM EST
it's starting to move northeastward. But it might be rain by the time it gets there.

When I'm imprisoned as an enemy combatant, will you blog about it?

Yes, poor tf. by toxicfur (4.00 / 1) #5 Fri Dec 29, 2006 at 12:24:30 PM EST
The South doesn't have a lot going for it, but it would be a sign of the coming apocalypse for my mom's place to get nearly 2 feet of snow in a couple of days. I never even held a snow shovel until the first time I visited ana....

Ah, the things we do for love. ;)

16 inches of snow is annoying but hardly crippling by clover kicker (2.00 / 0) #7 Fri Dec 29, 2006 at 02:03:24 PM EST
I'd expect the mountains to routinely get storms like that.

Well, by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #8 Fri Dec 29, 2006 at 02:38:13 PM EST
This is 16" on top of the 2 feet (blown into 3-4' drifts) they got shortly before we arrived. It looks like everything will be fine in terms of travel, but it is annoying in the meantime.

I do feel better since we got the car uncovered. Even if I'm not planning to go anywhere, I start to get cabin feverish if I know I can't go anywhere.

That's fairly typical winter in these parts by clover kicker (2.00 / 0) #10 Fri Dec 29, 2006 at 03:04:39 PM EST
I guess I expected the mountains to have outrageous winters, maybe it's Montana that sets all the snowfall records.

They've had a lot by ana (2.00 / 0) #11 Fri Dec 29, 2006 at 03:58:41 PM EST
of snow in the high country; this is along the foothills, and so somewhat unusual. Though the esteemed voters of Denver have bounced several mayors for their inability to keep the streets plowed after yet another Storm Of The Decade. Hence Frederico Peña, one time Secretary of Transportation, and before that, failed Mayor of Denver.

That's good.  I am sure they'll have the airport at full operational force by Sunday.  Optimism!

Please don't take offense. Though I think it would be funny if you had rated my comment a "2." ;)

But then, I don't want to have to dig crap out of the snow, so not so much. Unfortunately our more tame trip "into the snow" (i.e. up into the Sierra) was postponed due to car trouble. So maybe we'll go get stuck in the snow in a couple weeks...
