Looking across at the opposite wall:
Feeling kinda crappy today, so I don't think I'll be able to make the deep-fried dinner party :( I'm sure we'll be able to get together again soon though. Maybe we could finally try getting around to the Bovine, the official, but as of yet uninitiated, bar of Husi in TO sometime.
I've been renting Oz on DVD lately. I'm not sure how "realistic" the frequency of violence and muders is compared to what goes on in some badass USian prisons. I'm also not sure how much soul-searching and and attempts at redeption go on with real-life badass criminals in prison, and the actors often seem to have implausibly sophisticated dialogue. But it does make for some compelling drama. Interestingly, this is probably one of the most religious shows that I've seen. Or at least, deals with religion in a non-Hollywood way. As far as I can tell.
Oddly enough, there's even a "musical" episode in season 5. As close to a musical as ever there was in Oz there was*, yet still with that same razor-blade edge. After watching a few seasons, the show seems to take on this Waiting For Godot kind of absurdity to it. Highly recommended, provided you can withstand large amounts of male nudity, sex (both consensual and not,) violence, gallows humour and just plain mean behaviour.
* Pretty forced, no? I tried.
