According to Official Sources, this guy is called Wat Tambor. What Tever. He is awesome. I am no science fiction nerd, so any kind of steampunk stuff appeals to me on a pure novelty level. The character is also classic Star Wars in that it's a really cool concept and he's a neat looking droid, but you only see him in like two shots, and the first time around probably don't even notice that he's got a synthesizer strapped to his chest.

IIRC, there was a similar old-school robot character in Watchmen (he hung out at the superhero bar...am I thinking of the right book?). I loved him too.

Wat Tambor is also the foreman [sic] of the Techno Union. He's a union boss! A working class hero!

Oh wait, according to Official Sources, he's not even a robot, just a dude in a suit. Whatever, he is sweet.

Looked him up since even the remotest pro-union sentiment would be unusual for George Lucas.

He's described as an "industrialist" and the Techno Union seems to be a group of corporations.

Tambor oversaw a number of advanced technology plants scattered throughout the galaxy, and many major corporations, including Baktoid Armor Workshop, Haor Chall Engineering, Republic Sienar Systems, and Kuat Systems Engineering were signatory members of the Techno Union.

F1: "OK, so he's a guy in a robot suit...what the hell is up with the speaker on his chest and the steam pipes?"
F2: "Ummm....can't breathe our atmosphere?"
F1: "Dude we've already used that like 20 times."
F2: "OK....Evolved to become totally reliant on technology, even for life support?"
F1: "It'll have to do, Jesus look at the time. I promised my wife I'd be home before 9 tonight."
F2: "Well let's just think of a name for him and we'll flesh the rest out in the morning."

I'm fond of people in turn of the century versions of what the future would look like, and of people in bear costumes. Or bears. Mainly because they look like people in bear costumes.

Yoda gets enough press, as is. I applaud your bringing the spotlight to more subtle and obscure moments of awesomeness.
