credit where credit is due Hulver fixed most of the Scoop problems. I really like the changes made, but too bad Hulver and Rusty just throw cheeze doodles at each other when in the same room and refuse to work together and share code and ideas.

From what I know by Orion Blastar (1.00 / 1) #13 Tue Oct 04, 2011 at 02:05:30 AM EST
he hasn't. If so Rusty would have added in the mods and gave him credit or others would run Hulver's mods and not have to go to Rusty to get the old buggy Scoop like when Ron Paul ran Net Money Chat, couldn't get Hulver's mods so he got Rusty's mods, got owned by hackers like NWIS and Jason and maybe Egil.

It's an anti-spammer defence.

When new users sign up, they end up in a group that doesn't allow html links, this is to stop spammers (who do the most sign ups) posting links to crappy sites.

I've put you in the proper users group now, so your next post will be fine.

Good going Hulver by Orion Blastar (1.00 / 1) #16 Tue Oct 04, 2011 at 03:23:28 AM EST
will you play Tradewars? Rusty needs his butt kicked by someone, maybe you could do it?

Rusty solved that problem with the $5 paywall, new users have to pay $5 to activate their accounts and then he has their payment info to see who they are. I hear he uses the extra money for beer money. Jason, Egil, NWIS dupe bomb Kuro5hin at $5 each and after a while only buy one account at a time, After page widening diaries, comments, and posting links to Rustina, they get anonymized and have to pay another $5 to activate a new account. After a while they run out of money and Rusty can drink himself silly and polish up his monocule and laugh at them.

Spammers are too cheap to pay the $5 but keep signing up accounts anyway using web robots.

Never logged onto a BBS before? by ucblockhead (4.00 / 2) #2 Mon Oct 03, 2011 at 11:51:46 PM EST
My first online community was the Escondido BBS in 1982.

BTW: links aren't allowed on Husi.  Too much of a chance for Goatse.cx

Bulliten Board System by Del Griffith (2.00 / 0) #23 Wed Oct 05, 2011 at 09:09:38 AM EST
Originally it was to post messages much like an internet forum.  Things evolved to include email, then a global network was built to exchange forum messages & email (fidonet)..  As BBSes got more 'complicated' multiline systems were created that could handle multiple users at the same time.. Because most of them ran on OS's like MS-DOS there is no real IPC so they used files to share data betwen multiple instances.. Things like node chats came about and of course multiuser doors (games)....

The internet always existed but in 1995 with the release of Windows 95, end users finally could get a TCP/IP stack built in the OS..  This basically destroyed the BBS scene within a year.

Sadly BBS software proved to be too expensive and cumbersome to make accessable over the internet.  And web servers were all the rage so that was basically it.  Not to mention people LOVED the idea of being able to do more than one thing at a time with TCP/IP vs dialing up to a BBS and only being able to do one thing at a time....

If you are interested you can check out the BBS documentary... it starts here (in 10 minute youtube chunks)

I didn't understand half of what you replied, but I appreciate you writing it.

I was 16 years old in 1995 and my first email was sent in 1997. It was about three years before I used my email address for anything other than forwarding "hilarious" pictures and dodgy erotica.

Before Scoop by Orion Blastar (2.00 / 0) #27 Wed Oct 05, 2011 at 04:35:58 PM EST
and the world wide web, we had BBS systems that had their own forums and message boards. Only one person could use it at a time, post a message, log off and others would log on and reply or post new messages.

The Internet killed it deader than Disco.

Were dial-up forums in the pre-internet days where people argued about whether C64s or Apple ][s were better.

He once spent nine hours typing in a "music" program he found in the manual. It played two bars of Beethoven.

So easy that even the inane and annoying Orion Blastar can do it. :)

I mean took me like a long time to download due to Internet lag, but once I got Syncroterm it was easy to use. INS to add in Ogg Frog BBS, make sure to enter www.oggfrog.net as the address and save it. Tradewars here I come, to let off some steam!

Yeah Hulver's mods breaks Firefox spellcheck by Orion Blastar (1.00 / 1) #14 Tue Oct 04, 2011 at 02:07:47 AM EST
It shows words underlined in red, but cannot access the dictionary of suggested words to change them. A lot of the Javascript does weird things to Firefox. Maybe you Husie users can use Internet Explorer, but I cannot. Sometimes I post from Mobile Safari on an iPod or use Firefox in Ubuntu or Windows Vista.
