credit where credit is due Hulver fixed most of the Scoop problems. I really like the changes made, but too bad Hulver and Rusty just throw cheeze doodles at each other when in the same room and refuse to work together and share code and ideas.

It's an anti-spammer defence.

When new users sign up, they end up in a group that doesn't allow html links, this is to stop spammers (who do the most sign ups) posting links to crappy sites.

Rusty solved that problem with the $5 paywall, new users have to pay $5 to activate their accounts and then he has their payment info to see who they are. I hear he uses the extra money for beer money. Jason, Egil, NWIS dupe bomb Kuro5hin at $5 each and after a while only buy one account at a time, After page widening diaries, comments, and posting links to Rustina, they get anonymized and have to pay another $5 to activate a new account. After a while they run out of money and Rusty can drink himself silly and polish up his monocule and laugh at them.

Spammers are too cheap to pay the $5 but keep signing up accounts anyway using web robots.

Originally it was to post messages much like an internet forum. Things evolved to include email, then a global network was built to exchange forum messages & email (fidonet).. As BBSes got more 'complicated' multiline systems were created that could handle multiple users at the same time.. Because most of them ran on OS's like MS-DOS there is no real IPC so they used files to share data betwen multiple instances.. Things like node chats came about and of course multiuser doors (games)....

The internet always existed but in 1995 with the release of Windows 95, end users finally could get a TCP/IP stack built in the OS.. This basically destroyed the BBS scene within a year.

Sadly BBS software proved to be too expensive and cumbersome to make accessable over the internet. And web servers were all the rage so that was basically it. Not to mention people LOVED the idea of being able to do more than one thing at a time with TCP/IP vs dialing up to a BBS and only being able to do one thing at a time....

I was 16 years old in 1995 and my first email was sent in 1997. It was about three years before I used my email address for anything other than forwarding "hilarious" pictures and dodgy erotica.

I done did a thing I done did back in the 1980's and 1990's I logged into an IBM PC ANSI BBS to play Tradewars.

The Tradewars test server, looks like it works. I got some practice in and got bored. I am Orion Blastar on the BBS now.

It shows words underlined in red, but cannot access the dictionary of suggested words to change them. A lot of the Javascript does weird things to Firefox. Maybe you Husie users can use Internet Explorer, but I cannot. Sometimes I post from Mobile Safari on an iPod or use Firefox in Ubuntu or Windows Vista.
