we checked out a disc golf course in dallas on saturday; was much fun. :)

because people go home for thanksgiving? My guess is you don't follow sports, otherwise you'd know this from him being a lion's, piston's, and Tiger's fan.

"home" by aphrael (2.00 / 0) #4 Mon Nov 27, 2006 at 01:17:57 PM EST
is a slippery subject. i go to dallas for thanksgiving, but home is san francisco.

with my heart.

don't forget the redwings baby! by alprazolam (2.00 / 0) #6 Mon Nov 27, 2006 at 01:24:52 PM EST
not that they didn't let me down, twice, over the break. sigh. maybe they'll be on local tonight since they play dallas.

but anyway i was born near troy and my parents now live near east lansing, so i spend thanksgiving and christmas there.

dallas is anything but home. i don't know if i'd really call anywhere "home" for me. that's ok, gives me a lot of sports teams to like :)

As something of a Sedaris fanboy... by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #3 Mon Nov 27, 2006 at 12:28:47 PM EST
I feel the need to point out that "Naked" was his first book of essays. The latest one is "Dress Your Family in Corduroys and Denim," but IMO, his funniest book is "Me Talk Pretty One Day." His humor does tend toward anger, but it resonates with me. "Santaland Diaries" gets me through the Christmas season every year, and his short fiction in "Barrel Fever" (which also contains a couple of essays, I think, and was his first book) has some seriously twisted stories in it.

He's much better live (or at least in audio) than he is in print, for me, at least. I've seen him read once, and I was impressed that, as his fans were gathered outside the Harvard Bookstore waiting to get in, he came out, had a smoke and signed and chatted. He also makes a point of asking each person in signing lines a bizarre question (something I preempted by having something to say when I got to the table).

Oh, and no, 9 hours of football is not too much. There needs to be something soothing on tv as I sleep off the tryptophan. ;-)

I must have missed that Naked was old. I just assume that since it's new to me, it's new to everybody ;)

But yea I agree Me Talk Pretty One Day was probably the funniest, while I liked DYFiCaD best because it was a little sappy about his family. I really liked him on NPR, haven't heard him on it lately (not that I listen as much as I used to). The Yalie said she was surprised by his voice but since I heard him on the radio first I have a slight tendency to read in his voice, for certain parts anyway. I thought he was brilliant on the radio.

And I definitely snoozed through most of that third game. Who knows, maybe that's some sort of marketing technique. I don't see how they can expect anybody to stay awake for the whole thing.

Sedaris shows up on This American Life... by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #10 Mon Nov 27, 2006 at 02:02:30 PM EST
very occasionally now. I haven't enjoyed the stories (with anthropomorphic animals) that he's been telling as much as I like his essays, though.

And I'm just excited that there are other people who read his stuff. :-) I get all fanboyish every time he's mentioned.

I couldn't care less about football by ShadowNode (2.00 / 0) #7 Mon Nov 27, 2006 at 01:25:46 PM EST
But I do know the Lions won. ;)

considering they beat the montreal alouettes by alprazolam (4.00 / 1) #8 Mon Nov 27, 2006 at 01:32:23 PM EST
seems like it would be hard to count that as much of a victory. like winning a boxing match against a ballerina.

you didn't get cutie's name, phone or email addy.

i got her name by alprazolam (2.00 / 0) #12 Tue Nov 28, 2006 at 03:47:37 AM EST
no point in getting a phone number but i realized monday afternoon i shoulda got an email addy, just because she was fun to talk to. oh well. i'm not really good at that sort of thing anyway. still at least i talked to her and did a good job at it, i can try to get an email addy next time. its a real slow process for me, learning to meet people and such. i really need a little checklist or manual to go through just to make sure i'm doing everything right.

got me 32 points in fantasy play this week. It looks like I will be the league leader for the week.
