Photo Friday: Weaving

Today we have some photos illustrating the weaving done in the living museum of Gearrannan, a formerly inhabited "blackhouse village" on the Isle of Lewis. In this case these houses were occupied until the late sixties. (The name "blackhouse" comes from the difference between the older stone houses and the newer white-painted modern housing.) The weaver here is creating a tweed cloth - the (relatively) famous Harris Tweed.

Okay, so I think I was pretty lucky with this one. Taken off the northern-most point of Lewis, where the gulls hover in strong updrafts from the wind rushing up the steep cliffs.

This is a shot of Traigh Losgaintir, a beach on the west coast of the lower half of the Isle of Lewis. (For some reason, at this point it's actually the Isle of Harris, despite the two areas being the same island...)

Photo Tuesday: Stones

Today's photo is taken on a recent holiday to the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. I'll post a few more over the next week or so. The subject is the Callanais Standing Stones, an astonishing collection of slabs of rock on a small hill on the west coast of the island. The one in the center is just under five metres tall.

There was a ship staying briefly in one of the docks near to where I work, so I went to take some photos. I use the term rigging to refer to the subject of this photo as I have no idea what the correct terminology is...
