Hi!

I'm going to be in NYC the week of the 29th on business, and aphrael and I are planning a dinner because science says internet strangers should meet over comestibles. And we always do what science tells us.

Anyway, so I'm reading about all the other stuff in image compression and signal processing. Turns out the big new thing is "compressed sensing" or "compressive sensing". Of course, as expected, Terry Tao wrote the most important article on it.

Vising schools, a monastery. Will have limited connectivity. Therefore, big questions about social order will be deferred until my return. I will definitely be thinking about them, though.

So I'll quickly retype. PSU invited me to their information day. "This invitation is extended to applicants with offers or high on our waiting list." I don't have an offer, so I presume I'm high on the waiting list. They're my top choice, so if I get accepted there, I am definitely going.

The wifing unit is considering getting a pressure cooker. Since she's a vegetarian these days, she thinks it would be a good idea, since it cuts down on the cooking time of beans. I don't think it's terribly significant, but I'm open to reason.

Pressure cooker: good or wack?

Fittingly it's been basically five years since I last posted a diary here - I see I wrote one in 2007 during my summer between jobs. I'm glad for the meme, as back in January I thought a big update would be worth writing but I'm still more procrastinator than not. It's Friday and I'm happy.

So I was looking for 2-player card games for the wifing unit and I to learn, and I think those are the ones I've settled on. One thing that makes it easier is that the first two use the same 32-card deck.

We got a bunch of suggestions from the book of faces when I asked about 2-player card games, but I figure I'll solicit for more here. I didn't like a bunch of the ones on the book of faces for a variety of reasons (for some reason, I don't like rummy-type melding games, I like trick-taking games), though a few are great and quite suitable for our purposes.

In case anybody has forgotten. Here's a convenient FAQ about how horrible communism was: http://econfaculty.gmu.edu/bcaplan/museum/comfaq.htm
