Attempts to be a good Samaritan fail

So it was my daughters 17th birthday party over the weekend. I had the sense to buy a large tent for her last party so her guests could party, drink and sleep outside the house. By comparison with last year it seems to have gone relatively well.

                                                            This year      Last Year
Drunk People taken home early         1                    5
Guests needing to go to hospital        0                    1

The only guest needing to go early managed this year managed to do it for the second consecutive year. She seems to come to a party, drink like a fish for an hour and then wonder why she feels very ill. Drove her home at 20mph with her head out of the window all the way

Some of her guests didn't stay overnight so from about 11pm I started taking them home. On one such journey, we noticed that there was a young woman sitting half on, half off the pavement/ sidewalk. And after dropping the guests off I noticed she was still there, and stopped to see if I could help. She seemed a little incoherent but named an address where she claimed to live only about a mile away so my daughters friend and I got her into the back of the car and drove her there. When we got to the street where she lived she couldn't find her keys (they were in her bag on a huge keyring) and then started claiming my car was hers and tried to get back in, before collapsing on the pavement again. At this point I decided I'd done enough so we got back in the car and drove off. We phoned the non-emergency line who told us to dial 999 for an ambulance, which we did. What was really strange was that the ambulance line seemed to want the whole story instead of getting a frickin' move on.

Other News

1. I'm going to replace the modem/router supplied by Talk Talk. Devices randomly disconnect and my TV can't play a Netflix film for more than about 30 minutes before it terminates abruptly, Current price/ performance candidate seems to be an Asus DSL-AC88U. Nearly bought one secondhand on eBay yesterday but couldn't put a bid in as was picking up a freezer as the auction was closing. Tried again later and was successful

2. In Laravel, implementing routes manually/individually before finding out about Route::resource is a bad idea.

In re dispatching… by bobdole (4.00 / 1) #1 Mon Aug 13, 2018 at 07:31:04 AM EST
…did a project which involved quite a few visits to such a call-center. The general rule is that you dispatch almost immediately, and then spend time on filling in the details which a colleague listening in relays to the moving nee-naw.

Confuses some callers, but expedient and well-tried technique…

we don’t do that in the United States. Too much liability.
