Y'know the hot mustard US Chinese restaurants often give you? This is what you do with it.

(Inspired by Gevondur)

Put hunk of pork in crock pot (I usually use shoulder with bone so the dog can have the bone).

Pour over 1 bottle or can of ginger beer. Works with ginger ale, but not as good. If you use ginger ale, add 1/4 tsp ground ginger in the sauce, below

Mix 1/4-1/3 C soy sauce with the mustard (one or two containers), 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder (if you have it, or you can put in 1 onion chopped fine and 2 cloves fresh garlic). Add 1/4 tsp Chinese Five Spice (if you have it, or a pinch of cloves, coriander, and cumin; easy on the cloves because the flavor can take over). Pour mix into crock pot.

Cook on low 10-20 hours. I often start it the night before, and turn it off to cool an pull in the afternoon. Should pull apart with a fork.

Skim fat off the liquid. Boil down to at most half volume, or further. If too thin, thicken with about 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 1 Tbs soy. Adjust seasoning to taste

Mix sauce with pulled pork.

Eat.

Brown the pork under the broiler by wiredog (4.00 / 2) #1 Thu Mar 16, 2017 at 08:26:00 AM EST
For vaguely Chinese carnitas.

May have to try this.

I have been meaning to put the slow-cooker to use.

Chill out, snowflake.

Lately, I've grown tired of my slow cooker by lm (4.00 / 1) #4 Fri Mar 17, 2017 at 08:37:42 PM EST
Everything it can do can be done better by my dutch oven in the oven. As imprecise as the oven is with regards to temps, it's a whole lot more precise than any slow cooker I've worked with.

I have an old crock pot by iGrrrl (2.00 / 0) #5 Sat Mar 18, 2017 at 08:15:06 AM EST
Before the days of the elevated slow cooker.

Oddly enough, it was given to me by my ex when we were together. We were punks and roadies and it seemed like the weirdest gift to give your punk roadie girlfriend. It gave that scene in Suicide Squad, with the 50's family image of Harley Quinn and the Joker, an odd additional resonance.

That's a great story by lm (2.00 / 0) #6 Sat Mar 18, 2017 at 04:12:24 PM EST
I can imagine a scene in something like Penelope's Spheeris' Suburbia where that happens.
