It's been a year since I last wrote one of these things, so it seems like time to do it again. Updates inside.

When I last wrote, Jen had just finished a failed surgery. Her chance of a cure for her cancer was basically zero. Since then, nothing has changed. While that's not great news, it's certainly better news than we expected.

Let me back up. Last Christmas was rough. We didn't expect Jen to live through 2016, so Christmas had a lot of pressure. Everybody wanted to make it the best Christmas ever. The end result is that it sucked. Kids misbehaved, family was on edge. It certainly could have been worse, but it wasn't what anyone wanted.

To an extent, that theme continued throughout this year. We did quite a bit of traveling to see friends. Jen said it seemed like everybody wanted to see her one more time before she died. As you can imagine, that can be difficult to take. By the end of summer, we were just worn out. All of the traveling had really taken a toll on our whole family. That's when we decided just to get back to our normal lives. And thank goodness for that! Things are much better now.

We did have some great times during the year. We took a family trip to Hawaii. Our oldest has always been fascinated by volcanoes. Jen wanted to be the one to take him to see a volcano in real life. We spent 10 days split between the beach and Volcano National Park on the Big Island. It was an amazing trip and a great time for us.

Outside of too much travel, our year was pretty average. The kids are now both in elementary school. Tommy loves Kindergarten and is doing great. Mikey has started getting into school more. He struggled to read last year, but something seems to have clicked this year and he's really doing a great job. I had a blast coaching their soccer team this fall.

Work is still work. I am CTO of www.hubtran.com which is a transportation focused software company. I enjoy my job quite a bit. I work with an amazing group of people doing something interesting. It's hard to ask for much more than that! Jen is still working 8 days out of every 10. The other two days are when she feels like crap due to chemo.

Jen's health is basically where it was last year at this time. About half way through the year she started going downhill, but it turned out to be diabetes caused by the chemo. Once she got that under control she was back to her old self. Her oncologist told her today that she was tolerating the chemo better than anyone she had ever met and didn't see any reason to change as long as it is working. Her surgeon says things are getting worse, but not quickly enough to make any changes.

The end result of all this is that Jen was around for what we are calling Bonus Christmas #1. Hopefully it will be one of many! This year has had quite a range of emotions. More than anything else, I feel like we've had a return to normalcy. While it won't last forever, my life is really good right now. I'm going to just relax and enjoy it while I can.
