On the way to the Sunday night AA meeting last night when I saw this hit and run.

Right about here I was driving down the street and saw a woman jaywalking . Slowed down, as she wasn't looking either way and WHAM she flew up in the air, came down about 15 feet further down the road, headfirst, and then the car in the other lane (which must have been both speeding, and ran the stop sign) ran over her legs and sped off.

Her shoes were laying in the street where the impact occurred.

I slammed the brakes and pulled out the cell phone and called 911 before I even got out of the car. She was bleeding from a nasty head wound, and her shoulder and legs were obviously badly crushed. Couldn't tell if there was any spine injury, though it would be a miracle if there wasn't. Heck, it was miraculous that she was still breathing when they carried her off in the ambulance. I didn't get a good look at the car that hit her, as I was distracted by her going airborne like that, except to see that it was dark colored, a sedan, and of relatively recent vintage. If he'd just stopped he probably wouldn't have gotten in much, or any, trouble. She was jaywalking and not even looking for traffic. Instead the police are on the lookout for him, and there's gotta be damage to the left front of his car.

Took the ambulance and police a few minutes (maybe 5? Felt like forever...) to get there. Meanwhile several people who got there right after stopped and helped to (try) to stop other cars from driving through. One Fairfax Connector bus decided to ignore us and drove through anyway, managing to not actually run over anyone. As I was still on the phone with 911 I passed along the license plate. Hope he gets fired over that. Some people...

Once the police rolled in they blocked the road. Want to really piss of a cop? Come up to the line of cones blocking the road, with several police cars scattered about with lights flashing, and a fire truck and ambulance in the road with lights flashing, and drive right through the cones. But that idiot stopped really quick when the cop ran up with his hand on his weapon, screaming. Some people...

The bystanders (and witnesses) were a Very Reston group. An Indian couple (she in a sari, him in a turban), the hispanic guy (who got a good look at the car speeding off) and was able to give the description to the police. A white girl in a Prius.

[Update] She didn't survive.
On the way in to work this morning the guy in the Jeep behind me didn't see my bright yellow convertible stopped at the red light. He was very apologetic, and I will be calling his insurance company. Second time this has happened. VW should sell their stealth technology to the Defense Department, because it's pretty effective.

I'm glad there were people around to help the woman.

This morning, I saw a woman in a black Volvo run a red light and almost cream a cyclist who was in the bike lane. Then, of course, she screamed at the cyclist. I tried to catch up with her so I could scream at her, too, since she also almost hit some pedestrians crossing with the walk light. Sadly, the next light turned green before I could accost her. People are idiots. Probably me included.

Damn. ACTUAL Jaywalking. by ammoniacal (4.00 / 1) #2 Wed Aug 31, 2016 at 01:05:50 AM EST
People wrongly call it that at an intersection, when it's actually crossing against the signal. Jaywalking happens BETWEEN intersection crossings.

Yes, I AM fun at parties.

running stop signs by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #3 Wed Aug 31, 2016 at 10:09:17 AM EST
earlier this summer I planted shrubs outside my fence so I wouldn't have to watch ALL the vehicles (90% of them) run the stop sign outside my house.  Even school buses don't stop (although they do slow down before turning).  it drives me nuts and totally stresses me out.

The back of my home abuts a stop sign. by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #4 Thu Sep 01, 2016 at 11:31:16 AM EST
My home is literally the closest house to the entrance to our development. 90% of the cars do not come to a complete stop. So much so that when I ride my bike to work I actually walk it across that intersection to give me some options for escape if someone decides to try and run me over.

Last week my only option was to give the woman the finger because there was no time to go any place. Fortunately she managed to stop before she hit me.
