I expected better robots frankly, most of those bots would have been trounced by the top tier of 15 years ago.

I hope the show sticks around though, after a couple seasons people would presumably get their shit together.

In a perfect world they'd also start making new episodes of Scrapheap Challenge.

Aren't they the same robots as 15 years ago? by lm (2.00 / 0) #1 Tue Jul 14, 2015 at 08:33:53 PM EST
Or at least the most effective robots were all copycats of Blendo from Robot Wars, no?

There is no more degenerate kind of state than that in which the richest are supposed to be the best.

there seemed to be only 2 effective builds, the spinners and the pneumatic flippers.

Flipper vs flipper can make for interesting fights, lots of maneuvering and flips.

Spinner vs spinner or spinner vs flipper tends to be resolved with the first hit, more of a pistol duel than a fencing duel.

A flipper can beat a spinner because few spinners can survive flying 10 feet into the air and hitting the floor or wall with their weapon.

This season they've got a couple of competent flippers and a couple of good looking spinners, one of the spinners can powder bowling balls so in that sense the state of the art has improved.

But there are still people trying to use weak hydraulic lifters or wimpy axe/hammer attacks, designs that got trashed in the first round last time it was on TV ages ago.

I get the feeling by kwsNI (4.00 / 1) #3 Wed Jul 15, 2015 at 12:03:17 AM EST
The contestants and their bots were chosen for diversity and entertainment purposes. It'd be boring to the average prime time network TV audience to see a bunch of identical designs and debate subtle differences and strategy. I'm glad to see it back, but it's on the wrong network.

Also, the debacle with the net just showed exactly how inexperienced they are at running this. They didn't even have a good set of rules.

Yeah one of the girl piloted robots was selected as a wildcard to go to the second round, the one with the glowing brain on top. The missus says "I wonder why they picked that one",  I replied "affirmative action" expecting a punch but she shrugged and said "I can't be mad if it's true".

Oh yeah. Can't believe they're allowing flamethrowers, just a matter of time until a spinner ruptures someone's tank and they have a big ol' fireball.
