I am in the market for a digital audio storage solution. I have a rather large quantity of CDs which I wish to rip uncompressed and listen to on various devices.
To that end, I am considering a NAS solution.

What I had not bargained for, is that the choice of NAS, and even the choice of hard drive vendor can seriously impact the sound quality of the digital music reproduction. As if that were not worrying enough, it seems that even ones choice of ethernet cable can affect the sound quality.

Now I'm no audiophile, but I do have several degrees in computer science, and so I was more than a little surprised to find that the 0s and 1s sound different when they come from a Western Digital drive over cat 5 cable vs from a Seagate drive over cat 7.

But some people clearly can hear a difference. Can anyone shed any light on this?

I'm also wondering what impact different RAID levels might have on the sound quality.
