On being an old fart.

1) Listen, we're mostly old farts here so I think I'll have company when I say this...I'd be okay if every goddamn entitled millennial with an internet connection was shot straight to the sun.

I mean you GG and naked picture redditors, especially.

2) It sucks when your guinea pig dies. :( You were a good one, Cookie.

although i consider myself a generation x-er, by the mariner (2.00 / 0) #13 Thu Oct 23, 2014 at 12:46:18 PM EST
i was born on the boundary between gen x and millenials. so i'm not old!

man, idk about that gamergate stuff. i can't stand stand either side of it. like, social media feminist who uses paper tigers' threats to advance neoprohibitionist agenda or betas who like interactive snuff films? how about no...

I'm right there with you by theboz (2.00 / 0) #15 Thu Oct 23, 2014 at 01:26:59 PM EST
I see the Baby Boomers are the worst generation to have lived in recent history, so it's kind of hard to complain much about other generations.  Generation X is a little too bitter and the Millenials are a little too naive I guess if I had to pick something.

As far as "gamergate" is concerned, I don't know why people really care.  I'm not a big fan of modern "feminism" as it is basically a movement that seeks to remove any sense of responsibility for the actions of women, but the gamer bros aren't really all that great either.  I think the debate over the HAES (healthy at every size) movement is the perfect example of this -- you have fat stupid bitches on one side, and bullies on the other.  I'd prefer to just stay on neither side.

indeed, the baby boomers are the true enemy. by the mariner (4.00 / 1) #16 Thu Oct 23, 2014 at 02:01:24 PM EST
they inherit the western tradition, strong institutions and cultural norms, and a great economy. then they sell the first two to pay for their retirements.

yeah, basically anything with some version of the online social justice movement on one side and another kind of internet weirdo on the other sucks.

I think they were the first "me" generation, and their complaints about younger generations are usually the result of them seeing something of themselves in their children, except that their children don't have as many advantages as they did.  Since they're completely self-centered, they're not able to see that maybe they did a bad job as parents, as well as custodians of society.

yeah, basically anything with some version of the online social justice movement on one side and another kind of internet weirdo on the other sucks.

One could take a lesson from Dr. Seuss -- the sneeches, whether star-bellied or plain, are all a bunch of fucking idiots that need to get a life.  Either that, or I'm tired and the medication is making me loopy.

writing "fat stupid bitches" fully places you in "the other" camp, right? Congrats. You chose.

dude, he's just identifying the sides of the issue by the mariner (2.00 / 0) #19 Fri Oct 24, 2014 at 10:29:04 AM EST
it's not like he's going out of his way to be an ass about it. never thought i'd see the SJWs take over this site too.

[ Parent ]
If that were the case by ammoniacal (4.00 / 1) #21 Fri Oct 24, 2014 at 04:02:20 PM EST
then it would be more appropriate to refer to the bullied/bullies, eh?

Also, note to self: called a SJW for the first time ever today.

i see which side YOU come down on. by the mariner (2.00 / 0) #23 Fri Oct 24, 2014 at 04:28:30 PM EST
it cannot be reduced to the simple binary you suggest. for example, a search of social media outlets such as reddit easily turns up examples of victims on both sides. (try keywords "hambeast bullied") as such, a more careful delineation of the sides at issue is needed.

if you don't want to be labeled an SJW, you should keep your loaded, judgemental rhetoric to yourself.

??? by the mariner (2.00 / 0) #27 Sat Oct 25, 2014 at 06:45:43 AM EST
obviously, he was referring to fat women, not women. there's a pretty big difference there. often more than a factor of two.

[ Parent ]
No, I was not generalizing women by theboz (2.00 / 0) #28 Sun Oct 26, 2014 at 12:07:14 AM EST
I was specifically talking about "fat stupid bitches" which isn't a code word or anything other than exactly what it is. None of those types of people are around here as far as I know, and they aren't the type of people most run into on a regular basis other than online on a handful of sites like reddit and tumblr.

To make sure you understand more clearly, I support equality. I also don't care about traditional gender roles. If a woman works as a construction worker and has a stay at home husband who makes the best tuna casserole ever, great. However, I think silly people who sitr around writing blogs about being "triggered" because a man they weren't attracted to made eye contact with them for too long need to get over themselves.

You were referring to men & women as bitches? by ammoniacal (2.00 / 0) #29 Sun Oct 26, 2014 at 04:36:30 AM EST
Because if you were only referring to women, then you were being a sexist. QED.

strangely enough, this is the most intelligent piece of commentary i've seen on this whole thing, not because of the obvious points made, but because it's so smart politically. "hipsters with degrees in cultural studies" -- so great. what an introduction to the american political right for a generation getting their first taste of new left wrath.
