I knew I shouldn't have hung around with that research group too much, they assigned work to me. I have to remember my spectral theorems from linear algebra. This really shouldn't be so bad, just showing that the eigenvalues of a certain covariance matrix (with 1s on the diagonal) have to be bounded by $1 pm 2omega_0$, for some blah blah blah. Being positive definite will, of course, follow, as $omega_0 > 1/2$. Anyway.

I'm just thinking aloud here - it's self-adjoint and there are strong L_1 and L_{infty} bounds on the off-diagonal elements, so this shouldn't be too bad if I remember how to do this.

Had a test today in probability. Did okay, missed the "tricky bit" in two of the problems, got one despite missing the trick, completely failed the other, but I mostly got the rest and others fared worse. I think I found the guy who's going to have the most theory chops. He just had an article published in representation theory, told me what stupid mistake I made on the test. Grades don't really matter, because this class really just becomes a test of what you've already seen before, as a lot of people coming into stat don't have a probability background, but a lot of people do. This year is really to get everybody on the same footing.

Still having super fun happy times here. Plenty of friend opportunity.

All I read these days, outside statistics, is global warming stuff. Occasional politics. Some reddit.

I used 265 KWH of electricity at home last month. Not sure if good or unremarkable. Getting a heated mattress pad so we can cut heating energy expenditure. Just ordered a 1.25gpm shower head.

Drinking tea. It's pretty okay.

I like being me a lot.

Is not outside stats.

Vive le Montréal libre.
depends on what you're reading by gzt (2.00 / 0) #2 Fri Sep 28, 2012 at 08:38:14 PM EST
i'm not reading the stuff put out by our spatio-temporal statistics group, i'm reading weather stuff.

you'll end up being that guy people throw fast food at from cars when they see him on the street.

That's what I was looking for.
