 Peas. Other garden stuff.

Pain relief & side effects.

 Last year's gardening included planting a pea vine of some variety; might have been sugar snap peas or other eat-in-the-pod ones, or ordinary green peas. One forgets.

They were totally overwhelmed by rampant morning glories, and managed to ripen the few pods that may have been blossoms when I bought the vine at the garden center. Not even enough for a meal, and I think by the time I found them, they were dried out. So I kept them.

This past winter, I tried to regrow several green onions that had unusally well-developed roots, after eating half the bulb and the green bits. So I had a small flower pot with some dirt in it, on my kitchen window sill.

Come spring, I planted the peas in the flower pot. Unlike the onions, I seem to be able to keep the peas moist, and they're perhaps 5" tall, and beginning to develop little windey things, hunting for something to climb. I should put them in the garden.

Meanwhile the garden is enjoying the 3" or so of rain we've had since I planted it the end of May. I planted tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, a sunflower, and a pea vine, all of which seem to be at least holding their own. Also from seed: radishes, lettuce, carrots. No immediate sign of them, though I haven't looked all that closely. My recollection from last year is that radishes come right up and are ready in just a few weeks.

Perhaps 15 years ago, not long after I came to work here, i was having some trouble with achy wrists when I typed too much, so went to the doc. The PA diagnosed tendonitis, and suggested taking naproxin (she gave me a prescription at first, but over the counter is fine) with meals to control any inflammation. That seems to work nicely, though historically I've noticed that if I reduce the dose I can feel it.

Latest decrepitude is blood pressure that's somewhat too high. So we tried a diet, which I think helped some, though of course when they measure it in the office, it's way higher than anything I measure at home. One can blame uncalibrated instrumentation, but it's also a mood thing. Anyway, apparently NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can increase blood pressure. Could I do without?

So I'm trying that. The wrists are mostly okay, but I'm trying to be sure I type with my wrists straight, and take frequent breaks. The thing that hurts is the muscles in my back, where I seem to park all the stress in my life. Of which (see other diaries in this series) there is no lack.

Thankfully the weather's been pretty good since it stopped raining all the time, so I can walk around the grounds, and out for lunch. Hm. Should go get me more coffee (and some grounds for the office). Exercise can't hurt.

Mood is: meh. Perhaps better next week. Dunno; we'll see.

Another cool thing... The former assistant priest at our parish left here to become Priest In Charge at another one that was going through a split (the priest and 2/3-ish of the parish left the denomination, largely over ordination of gay people to the priesthood and, in NH next door, as a bishop). He seems to have pulled the place together and gotten it functioning again. So when the lenghthy self-assessment and discernment process was done, the parish called him to be their permanent Rector.

Last Sunday night he was installed. The choir dude (name: Jack Russell, like the dog, which he resembles temperamentally) invited choristers from our place to come sing with them, and it was great fun. There's a section of the liturgy appointed for these things where various officers and groups from the parish give the new Rector stuff (keys, prayer book, supplies, etc.) with a few words about his many roles to come. His 2 young kids brought him a box of Lego and flubbed the assigned line (which the bishop read out on their behalf), and got a big hug. That picture made the front page of the local town newspaper. It's very cute.

Twas good to see Fr. P., and to know he's doing great things, and is appreciated.

I'll be in Philly in 2 weeks. Those of you who are around there might be thinking of a place I can get to from South Philly without a car where we can meet on Sunday the 24th. I should be free from mid-afternoon on (and could get out earlier if need be).

I'll be fine with anywhere we meet...

since you're the local, that you'd have some suggestions or ideas for a place to meet. I think aphrael will also be there. Not sure about mmangino and/or devtrash.

it's fairly difficult to suss out a good spot from afar.

i'd recommend somewhere we could hang for a couple of hours.

i'll be there all day, but i'm likely to either do the tourist thing for part of it or just skate around looking at shit. :)

maybe mmangino can suggest a place as I only go in once in a while. But honestly, the city is walkable.

As a first gambit, the one place I recall was the Percy Street Barbecue, which claims to be genyoowine texan style barbecue.  It's at 900 South St, which is not so very far from MARTA stations etc.

Four years ago now I was at a meeting at Penn's Landing, and 256 and e summoned me to a bar somewhere near Independence Hall, where there was a trivia game and not enough light (at the blue end of the spectrum, at least) to tell that e's hair was purple. Doubt I could find the place again on my own. Couple-ish blocks south of Market Street and, uh, 10-ish from the river. There are probably a dozen bars that would describe.

And that's all I know about Philly, other than the 30th St. train station, and where my friend lives who's hosting the partay I'm going to Philly to attend.

Percy St Barbecue by mmangino (4.00 / 1) #7 Mon Jun 11, 2012 at 09:22:09 AM EST
It's expensive, and not very good. But it is in a decent location. There's Quizzo at Nodding Head on Sunday at 9pm if you want to do quizzo. It's near some of the train stations and the subway, so it should be easy to get to. They have decent beers as well. Nodding head is more of a hang out type place than Percy Street. Near Independence Hall could be something like National Mechanics which is a dark, techy hangout spot.

As a non-drinking, early to bed person, I'm not the best to suggest hangout locations in they city.

as a non-drinking sort by aphrael (2.00 / 0) #8 Mon Jun 11, 2012 at 01:57:36 PM EST
are you uncomfortable in a drinking place? if so, that should inform our planning. :)

also, it seems like NONE of us are the right people to pick a place. which is funny on some level. :)

You can always do what we did - by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #9 Mon Jun 11, 2012 at 02:05:39 PM EST
when I was in DC. We picked a Metro stop to meet at, and then wiredog helped us pick a place. It helped that he knew the area, but we didn't make any concrete plans for where to hang out until we got there.

This is a great idea by mmangino (4.00 / 1) #11 Mon Jun 11, 2012 at 03:17:42 PM EST
depending upon weather and start time, we could all meet in one of the many wonderful squares and go from there depending upon mood. I know places to go in the main city areas.

It should be easy to all get together at Rittenhouse square, maybe by the goat statue in the SW corner.

This begins to sound like a plan. by ana (2.00 / 0) #12 Mon Jun 11, 2012 at 03:34:41 PM EST
 I gather this is Rittenhouse Square (though google is literally all over the map on the question, hehe).

Weather permitting we could hang out in the park and talk for as long as we want, and then find somewhere for dinner.

I should be available mid-afternoon or possibly earlier. I'm imagining this year will be much like last year was; people from all over will converge, eat, drink, be merry, and dribble off to the airport on Sunday afternoon.

Now we just need a time? Any thoughts on that? I can likely get over around 7pm or so.

I think aphrael wanted to catch a train back to NYC that evening, so we shouldn't go too late. We could do tag-team, if need be, I suppose.

that evening by aphrael (2.00 / 0) #15 Mon Jun 11, 2012 at 09:09:14 PM EST
is a flexible concept.

i'm not paying amtrak, so i have a bit of a convoluted return home:

Take the train from 30th st. station to trenton

9.49->10.35
10.49->11.35
11.49->12.34

take the regular train from trenton to penn sta

10.59->12.30
11.59->1.35
12.59->2.33

i'm fundamentally ok with any of these as I can just work from home the next day, and i can nap on the train.

I have no problems in bars, I just don't go to them very often since I don't drink.

My favorite tendonitis treatment by fluffy (4.00 / 1) #3 Sat Jun 09, 2012 at 02:46:35 PM EST
I have a couple of NSD Powerballs and they help a lot.  I use it during typing breaks (which I enforce via workrave on LInux/Windows and BreakZ on the Mac).  The downside is that it works well enough that I stop doing it regularly when I feel like I'm "better" and then I stay on a non-stop yo-yo cycle.

Blood Pressure by FlightTest (2.00 / 0) #16 Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 02:02:03 PM EST
White Coat Syndrome.  Demonstrably, my father has it.  His home BP unit agrees with the docs at the office, but shows much lower at home.  He's a pretty laid back guy, doesn't feel nervous or anything in the doc's office.  Take your home BP unit into the office and see if it matches your docs in the office.

Tried that. by ana (2.00 / 0) #17 Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 02:11:39 PM EST
I got all excited about actual data, and it was higher than anything I've ever seen my home unit produce. Resting, I get numbers that are reasonable, but if I've been moving around or stressing, it actually is high, according to the home unit. So there probably is an actual problem; it's just nothing like what they see at the doc's.
