was had by all.

So I spent this weekend in Philadelphia.

There's a group of folks that once blogged on another site, since defunct. They've been having get-togethers for years now. Last year I allowed as how the fem persona on the site was actually an aspect of the personality of a late-50s guy with a white beard. They were way more accepting than I imagined they'd be, and so I came to their meetup last June. This is the first rerun for me.

It was great. It's interesting, being in a peer group in different ways than husi is; ages more like mine (though widely varying); nearly everybody has been in marriages or long-term relationships that didn't work out. Some of them are still not working out, years later.

A few notable incidents... During dinner Friday night the Great Northeast Heatwave came to a crashing end. The wait staff spent much of dinner with mops, trying to get the lake in the parking lot to stop coming in. Maybe 2/3 of the way through the meal, the smokers' brigade came back inside, got one (non-smoking) guy who'd driven in from Ohio and took him outside, to show him the tree branch that was completely covering his car and the one next to it.

The next car had some damage, but our guy's did not, at least not beyond a few scratches. It wasn't going anywhere til the tree was removed, but he thought it was great fun; no harm done, nobody hurt, etc.

So Jacques, a 300 pound French Canadian who's one of the core members of the group, was in the hospital for a while a month ago. He's probably fine, but can't get traveling health insurance to leave Canada, and didn't want to risk another crisis in pay-as-you-go land.

Also, he wears a kilt.

Since he wasn't coming, well, somebody had to do it. I obtained a utilikilt and wore it to the party Saturday night. It seems to have gone over well; the astute observer will see pictures on fb.

So it's getting late, and i'm about 1.3 miles from the B&B, and I decide it's probaby wise to be where people are, as opposed to slightly dodgy streets that are mostly abandoned (but not completely) at 10pm on a Saturday night. So I walked down South Street, which is hopping with bars and restaurants and stuff. And I only got a few off-color comments, which pleasantly surprised me.

So those folks (the ones who don't live here) are on their way back home. Was fun. Will do again (give or take whatever happens in the oncoming year).

And so this evening was free, and I rounded up the local Philly husi-associated people (PHLHusi, to be pronounced "floozie" of course). So we had mmangino, yankeehack and her daughter (known here as LO), and aphrael rode the train down from NYC for the afternoon. Good company, good food. Loppear is also in the area, but had other plans for dinner, and we finally contacted him as we were breaking up (tomorrow's Monday, after all). They're moving to Philly in August; clock and Stacky are moving to Philly in August... We should get together after everybody's had a month or two to get settled. Say... half past October?

Stay tuned.

Tomorrow, the Amtrak Acela back to Boston, which takes right at 5 hours. And we'll see how the kitty has been keeping in my absence. Unhappy, I'm sure, but he'll get over it. Most of my cat bite scars are nearly healed; it's time for some new ones.

I had a great time as well. It's nice to put real life faces to names.

we hadn't bored her completely to tears.

It was fun. I wonder what state we'll be in next time we meet?

She really enjoyed you guys. She was following the conversation intensely. It's been a very long time since I have seen her put her phone down and not check it every 5 minutes.

that's good to hear by aphrael (2.00 / 0) #7 Mon Jun 25, 2012 at 04:58:10 PM EST
she was quiet, so i thought that meant she was disinterested. :)

mildly offtopic by aphrael (2.00 / 0) #6 Mon Jun 25, 2012 at 04:57:43 PM EST
this is mildly offtopic, but

> They were way more accepting than I imagined they'd be

so often it's our own fear of how well we'll be accepted which keeps us in the closet, rather than anything external to ourselves.

> aphrael rode the train down from NYC for the afternoon

i so wanted to be there earlier, but my body was not cooperative. stupid sleep.
