The Jeep shit its last brick over the weekend. I have my eye on a new Jetta Sportwagen TDI and so far haven't managed to talk myself out of it.

Also, what the heck do I do with a Jeep Grand Cherokee with 125k miles, a new transmission with less than 10k on it, a head gasket failure and a blown-up radiator? Would cost almost as much to fix as it's worth. Are there people who would buy it for parts or as a fixer-upper?

most of it's OK. If someone else has a trashed (e.g. RTA) one then there's enough parts to make one good vehicle. Well, I say "good" - it'd still be a Cherokee.

Specialist forum sounds like the way forward.

It's a shame, it's such a nice vehicle to drive - every possible bells and whistles - but the maintenance cost is just getting out of control.

Getting more attention than you since 1998 .

about 40K longer in your Jeep before I did, same reason maintenance got too high (mine wasn't as comfy to drive).

perhaps not such a good idea.   http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/06/13/12202632-teen-shoots-gun-at-gas-tank-but-bullet-ricochets-and-kills-him?lite

Not that it's very likely with a car, but still ...

if it's a 4.0L by barooo (2.00 / 0) #6 Wed Jun 13, 2012 at 10:41:05 AM EST
Jeep then you should be able to get rid of it easily.  If not, it'll be harder.

I've heard great things about the schportvagen.  I'd love to have one, but driving 3-4K a year and parking on the street in Chicago makes a new car kind of silly.

Can't you just ride your GS year round?  :)

man, i need a beefy taco now.

I haven't mastered the art of riding to work in business clothes yet, I end up either wrinkly, or I'm wearing jeans all the time, which I can't really do these days.

I suppose said clothes could just get wrinkled in the backpack instead.

Jeep....yeah there are people that want them for by dev trash (2.00 / 0) #12 Wed Jun 13, 2012 at 05:35:48 PM EST
parts.
I've a Tracker with 120k miles on it, somehow I don't think it will go for parts to anyone.  Well maybe Sidekick owners.

Is it possible by barooo (2.00 / 0) #16 Thu Jun 14, 2012 at 09:48:40 AM EST
for someone of our approximate generation to own a station wagon and not call it the Family Truckster?  That's what we call ours, too.  Although not so affectionately, the nickname came when it needed a wheel bearing and new tires new glow plugs upon arrival, even though we'd paid like $1500 above blue book because they were so freakin' rare at the time and it was alleged to be in "excellent" condition.

i don't think so by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #17 Thu Jun 14, 2012 at 12:36:44 PM EST
i mean, that's what wagons are, right?

i have to say, the space in the new ones ROCKS!  we can comfortably fit 2 adults in the front; rear-facing seat, seatbelt booster, and me in the back; and the dog + some gear in the trunk.  we just picked up a roof-top clamshell so we can carry even more gear (the dog eats up a lot of the trunk space) with ease.  all we need now is a hitch so we can get a hitch bike rack!
