and...

Just now ran in to this cartoon.

As a parent of a nine-year-old boy: yup, that's about it.

There is some truth to that by lm (2.00 / 0) #1 Sun Jun 10, 2012 at 04:14:28 PM EST
Ender's age was on of the hardest parts of the novel to swallow. Not so much from the military strategy aspect, however, but from perspective of the thoughts and emotions displayed by Ender.

Mostly I just imagined that his training took an additional two or three years before being promoted the first time.

Also of relevance is that, while not mentioned explicitly, I think there was a eugenics program going on. They were intentionally trying to produce a savant.

One of the weaknesses of the novel is that there is clearly something going on with the Wiggin family that is never explained.

If we take OSC at his word by lm (2.00 / 0) #3 Sun Jun 10, 2012 at 08:22:43 PM EST
... and assume that Ender's Game is not an intentional analogy of the Mormon faith but might have some elements of such, then it might make sense to see Ender, Peter, and Grace as being roughly analogous to Christ, Lucifer and the Holy Spirit respectively.

I need to re-read the beginning with an eye to clues about the program for producing child soldiers. Although, it's quite possible that such clues are only really available in the other books. According the Wiki chronology, almost half the books in the series happen prior to the events in Ender's Game.

Wiki also says that filming for the movie just started this past February. That, I'm not sure I can quite imagine.

I thought it was more straight forward.  Peter couldn't lead because he had no empathy and Valentine couldn't lead because she had no ruthlessness.  Only Ender had both.

I have only ever read the one book, though.

Me too by lm (2.00 / 0) #5 Mon Jun 11, 2012 at 05:50:34 AM EST
But at the end of Ender's Game, Peter has taken over Earth, no?

He's also become a kinder, gentler manipulator.

Wider than that I thought by Breaker (2.00 / 0) #6 Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 05:41:47 PM EST
The entire society was geared to producing that one vicious bastard that'd have the necessary that the high command were looking for.

Now, the fact that Ender was a third child is possibly worth some debate - Peter being a heartless nutcase and Valentine being hearts and minds, and all.

But for me it posed the question - how far would you distort basic parts of life in order to survive?  Fitting your kids with recording devices and placing them in a hothouse environment from a very early age?

That was what I found fascinating though, although never really addressed in the books - how far would you go, when the stakes are that high?

Haven't read the book by BadDoggie (2.00 / 0) #7 Thu Jun 14, 2012 at 04:40:42 AM EST
But based on the cartoon and comments I'd hazard a guess it's about a young boy who turns out to be a brilliant military tactician along the lines of Jean d'Arc, but in space. In a distant galaxy.

woof.

Probably more "is turned into" than "turns out to be".

What was that eighties movie where ... by lm (2.00 / 0) #9 Fri Jun 15, 2012 at 08:29:11 AM EST
... some geek kid saves the universe by playing video games? The Last Starfighter or something?

Kind of like that except the kid was trained by the military to play the video games from the age of six on because the government knew how brilliant at playing video games he would be and knew that they needed someone to play video games to save the universe.
