This morning I watched the beginning of Super 8, which opens with a "days since last accident" being reset.

I've long been proud of my driving record.   In thirty years, I've had no real accidents.  As a teenager, I had a couple scrapes pulling out of parking spots and at twenty, someone took out my taillight when I was motionless.  In the 26 years since then, I've had no accidents at all.

That record died this morning.  As I was taking my son to school, I rear-ended a girl1 driving in front of me stopped suddenly when a schoolbus popped up its stop sign.  She braked suddenly, and I was looking a bit to the side and didn't catch it in time.  I was only about to brake to 5-10 mph.

Minimal damage to her car.  Major dent in my bumper, but no drivability damage.

Oh well.

1 i.e. under 25.

No accidents that were my fault by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #1 Wed May 16, 2012 at 01:46:18 PM EST
Since, ummm, 1986? I sideswiped a mountain while driving an Army pickup.

Earth First!
(We can strip mine the rest later.)

I've done stupid things, no doubt by ucblockhead (2.00 / 0) #5 Wed May 16, 2012 at 03:38:30 PM EST
But I've also done well at avoiding accidents that would not have been my fault through good reactions.  I'm depressed as this one was just me being an idiot and not paying attention sufficiently.

I totaled a 300ZX Turbo by Phil the Canuck (2.00 / 0) #6 Wed May 16, 2012 at 04:49:52 PM EST
That was in 1993.  It was nobody's fault but my own, although I maintain that culvert pipe had it coming.  I have not had an accident since.

Getting more attention than you since 1998 .

Well, like you I hadn't had any stupid accidents since I was a teen.

That was until 11 days after I got my car last year...and rear ended a car at a stoplight because I took my foot off of the brake and I didn't anticipate how fast the car would lurch forward. My insurance covered the $500 new bumper for the 2003 Ford Taurus I rearended. So yeah.

Also, thing to know, as long as you don't surpass something like $1200 in at fault damages in two years after the accident, your rates won't go up.

I'm not too worried by ucblockhead (2.00 / 0) #8 Thu May 17, 2012 at 03:02:25 PM EST
The damage seems fairly light and my record is very good.  My wife has had two accidents on the same insurance.  In one, the other driver was at-fault.  The other was a $500 fender bender over five years go.
