less nervous energy today, which is good.

I ordered an old paperback edition of The Hobbit because I thought I should have one in the same edition as the LOTR we have and which both the wife and I grew up with, but when it arrived it turned out that it was slightly older than the one I wanted. It's from the late 60s, I wanted early 70s. It's fine, but it doesn't match. Oh well. I'm reading it because I finished Dune last night on the train.

Had a short chat with one of my former roommates who's a post-doc at Hahvahd in one of the physical sciences. Apparently Hahvahd is a bunch of nonsense, at least in his department, compared to his alma maters. Mostly talked about the tension in things, he also talked about some statistical problems plaguing the physical sciences, namely practical tools which aren't just spectral methods for modeling data. Esp. in high dimensions. So, if I find anything, I'll have to let him know.

Work work work.

Still waiting.

I like chess.

Did they ever take out the Express Train metaphor? by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #1 Tue Feb 07, 2012 at 11:45:12 AM EST
kind of jarring, since there's no train station in the Shire.

In LOTR not Hobbit by anonimouse (2.00 / 0) #3 Tue Feb 07, 2012 at 02:55:17 PM EST
Reference to Gandalfs dragon firework in "A Long Expected Party".

However hobbitsessss are tricksy, they are, and might have got the dwarves to build one for them. They might even have built one under the entire shire as a prelude to building Crossrail....
